The Paradox of Leadership: Strength Through Vulnerability Leadership often means bearing the weight of expectations—being strong, motivating others, and keeping the team on course. But what happens when the leader struggles to uphold this strength? This side of leadership—the vulnerability hidden behind the strenght—is rarely discussed, yet it’s a reality many leaders face daily. Balancing Strength and Authenticity The traditional image of a leader is one of unbreakable resilience, expected to motivate and press forward, even in tough times. Yet, behind this, there are moments of doubt, weariness, and vulnerability. Must we always hide it? I can't, I don't. Authenticity Without Losing Authority For leaders, balancing authenticity with authority is complex. Sharing moments of fatigue or doubt can build connection but must be done thoughtfully to maintain trust. Managed well, vulnerability can strengthen credibility. In my career I have faced, and still face, moments where it's incredibly challenging to confront obstacles without doubts or worries. By being authentic and sharing my uncertainties, I received genuine support from colleagues who often provided me with energy, trust, and understanding. Strategies to Face Emotional Challenges Here are the strategies I use to face challenges (at least, I try): -Prioritizing mental and physical health as much as I can. I enjoy meditation (I practice mindfulness daily) and have cut back on junk food (without lose the joy of a good pizza, once a while 😀...ok being international but my roots are always remind me I'm Italian...) helped me reduce my weight, bringing significant benefits to my mental resilience. -Support Networks: Leadership doesn’t have to be isolating. Trusted mentors or colleagues make a huge difference. Staying connected with a large, international network of talented and inspiring people has been invaluable to me. -Purposeful Transparency: While sharing struggles, communication must support the team rather than add burdens. By being open about challenges, leaders can build trust. Rediscovering Authentic Leadership Today’s true leadership, in my opinion, lies in embracing resilience and vulnerability. Recognizing and respecting our limits strengthens us as leaders. When we’re authentic, we inspire others to bring their full selves, fostering trust and mutual respect. The Risks of AI 1-Data Privacy: AI needs a lot of data, which can raise concerns about privacy and security, especially in sensitive industries like healthcare. Are we sure all employees have the ability and understanding which data to upload into AI ?How many of us know where, to whom and to do what the data we are uploading are used? 2-Bias in Data: If the AI is trained on biased data, it could lead to poor decisions or unfair outcomes. 3-Job Displacement: AI can replace certain roles, so it’s important to reskill teams and focus on tasks where human input is essential. The challenge question is: are there any roles where AI, soon or later, will not be able to replace into the R&D landscape? 4-Overreliance on AI: AI isn’t perfect, (until so far), so we need to avoid relying on it too much and always double checking the outcome produced. Moving Forward To make the most of AI while managing the risks, we should: a) Focus on Ethical AI to ensure fair outcomes: Who is going to define it? the same group who built it ? b) Boost Security to protect data and innovation: Companies need to take such role and assure the internal effort is protected and valued without shooting information in some bots without control c)Train Teams to work alongside AI and stay update on the new technologies, opportunities and tools offered to work better, faster and nicer. d)Promote Human-AI Collaboration for the best results: it is a nice slogan, I know, but it is impossible to stop this new wave, better knows it and get the best (without forgetting the limitations and risks). AI is here to stay, and if we use it wisely, it can help us achieve incredible things in R&D (and all other fields, of course). Teamwork and the Holiday Spirit: Turning Collaboration into Magic This year, at the Swiss entity of Sol-Millennium Medical Group, we decided to make our office special by decorating it for the holidays. But it wasn’t just about decorations; it was an opportunity to engage in team building and strengthen collaboration among colleagues. In our regions, it’s a tradition to set up holiday decorations between the 1st and the 8th of December, so we took the opportunity to honor this custom together. Everyone contributed: Andrea Maspero Marco Belluzzi Cinzia Marasco Ruidan Li Giovanni Mondo Gaetano Buttò Cristian Appari Davide Galimberti from creative ideas to hands-on work with lights and ornaments. At the end, we all came together to share a moment of celebration, enjoying panettone and pandoro (and a small glass of spumante brut...even this is a secret...shhhh ! don't tell it around... 😀) This experience reinforced to me two important lessons: - Be happy with what you have: appreciating simple moments, like decorating together and sharing a smile. - Keep the drive to improve: the desire to grow, both as individuals and as a team, is what helps us achieve greater goals. The same mindset applies to every project: value what we’ve already built while constantly looking forward, searching for new solutions and ideas. Years ago I got to organize a professional skills workshop for the women in my team where the Strictly Speaking Group taught us about communication styles and tools for being a more effective speaker. I didn't realize at the time just how valuable that 4 hour workshop would be to future roles. I still repeat the lessons in my mind when I stand in front of a crowd. Ground your feet and be still.
