🇺🇸🆔 U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Awards Contracts to Innovate Digital Credential Privacy The DHS Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) has announced government contracts awarded to Credence ID, Hushmesh, Netis d.o.o., Procivis, SpruceID, and Ubiqu. These contracts are aimed at developing privacy-enhanced technologies for digital versions of credentials used in immigration and travel, allowing users to store their information securely in digital wallets. Anil John, Technical Director of S&T’s Silicon Valley Innovation Program (SVIP), emphasized the importance of these developments, stating that the new capabilities will ensure secure storage and proper verification of credentials while preserving individual privacy. This initiative supports the DHS’s role as a primary issuer of critical credentials such as those for cross-border travel, employment eligibility, and citizenship. Jared X. Goodwin, Acting Chief of the Program Management and Data Division at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), highlighted that digital credentials and secure digital wallets meet the public’s expectations for convenience and security in a digital age. The standards for these digital solutions, developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), ensure global interoperability, accessibility, and privacy. The awards stem from the DHS Privacy Preserving Digital Credential Wallets & Verifiers solicitation, reflecting the department's commitment to enhancing service delivery while protecting privacy. This solicitation builds on previous efforts to address the vulnerabilities of paper-based credentials. Each selected company will receive up to $1.7 million across four SVIP phases. The awarded projects and their respective innovations are as follows: - Credence ID (Oakland, CA 🇺🇸 ) received $199,140 to adapt its existing identity verification technology to support W3C standards, allowing for a simple software update to current hardware readers. - Hushmesh Inc. (Falls Church, VA 🇺🇸 ) was awarded $199,430 to incorporate cryptographic security and zero-trust principles into its Mesh technology, enhancing key management for digital wallets. - NETIS Group (Ljubljana, 🇸🇮 ) received $198,849 to enhance its MIDVA platform, supporting organizational onboarding and credential verification through a Fleet Management Platform and Mobile Verifier App. - Procivis AG (Zurich, 🇨🇭) was awarded $187,285 to improve its Procivis One platform, making it more flexible and capable of handling various types of digital credentials. - SpruceID (New York, NY 🇺🇸) received $199,960 to advance its software for creating secure, verifiable digital credentials suitable for multiple sectors. - ubiqu (Rotterdam, 🇳🇱 ) was awarded $197,961 to integrate its Remote Secure Element technology, ensuring user control and secure recovery solutions for digital credential services Link to DHS media release in first comment

As the US Army continues to drive toward a truly #Data Centric environment in future Multi Domain Operations (MDO) and watch current conflicts in Ukraine and Middle East, I continue to reflect on this quote from a journal paper ( https://lnkd.in/dDYDiX59 ) titled "The Graveyard of Command Posts: What Chornobaivka Should Teach Us about Command and Control in Large-Scale Combat Operations" co-authored by LTG Milford Beagle, Jr ("Beags"), Commanding General of the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center - "we must reduce reliance on the physical dimension (the materiel), increase our utilization of the information dimension (the data), and maximize our relationship with the human dimension (our leaders)". These words can resonated within the resent analysis from Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET) and Emelia Probasco titled "Building the Tech Coalition: How Project Maven and the U.S. 18th Airborne Corps Operationalized Software and Artificial Intelligence for the Department of Defense". As you read this report, one can see the three dimensions from the "information dimension (the data)" with "system organizes and integrates data, allows users to select and leverage algorithms to process that data, and gives operators the ability to more quickly make decisions under accepted army doctrine and decision workflow" to the "human dimension (our leaders)" with "trilingual leaders—those who can communicate across operational, technical, and acquisition communities—were catalysts for success in paving a new path". These elements or factors help drive decision dominance on a modern battlefield. As we explore new ways and concepts to push the limits within MDO, this is a great report to read the "story of how the 18th Airborne Corps used the Scarlet Dragon Exercise series to develop the Maven Smart System (MSS), an instance where frontline army users and a coalition of technology companies—enabled by DOD (United States Department of Defense) leadership and policies—pursued and developed a new #technology that is having a meaningful impact on operations."   #artificialintelligence

#technology #unitedstates At this year’s DoD Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office conference in Washington, D.C. I was chatting with a participant from United States Air Force civilian support in Colorado between sessions. He mentioned to me United States Department of Defense is grappling with how to really apply AI across its warfighter and enterprise management operations. To me, it did not appear to be that difficult a problem to solve. IBM did several use cases in this area as conceptual consultant public reports going back several years to the days of DoD Joint Artificial Intelligence Center (JAIC) which preceded CDAO. IBM, however, did not cover this problem the Colorado Air Force conference attendee was talking about. If you take the current DOD/NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration/NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration data collection from military, weather, and other satellites, the streaming data collected is processed to achieve incrementally better results year after year without AI for decades. All that these same agencies need to do now is use AI intermediation for the same data sets whose sizes and data types obviously will not change but the type of programmatic intermediation to process the same data ingests to the desired outputs changes from non-AI to AI. Current outputs in production without AI intermediation are already known. The AI intermediated outputs need to be compared with current production outputs as benchmarks in parallel to measure the marginal gains from AI for both functions and cost of performing the functions to make decisions on AI adoption. What marginal feature improvements can AI, generative or otherwise, add?
