Exciting news from Epic Systems and Microsoft! They have announced that they are integrating generative AI technology into Epic's EHR for the first time! According to Seth Hain, Senior VP of R&D at Epic, this integration has the potential to increase productivity for physicians & staff. The integration will allow health systems using Epic's EHR system to run generative AI solutions through Microsoft's OpenAI Azure Service. The first use case will be through Epic's In Basket communication software system. Here clinicians can use generative AI to create a draft response when communicating asynchronously with patients. This has already been rolled out to a limited number of users at UW Health and UC San Diego Health, with Stanford Health Care expected to follow soon. The second use case will allow providers to use generative AI to source recommendations from Epic's Slicer Dicer data visualization tool. While there is excitement around its potential benefits, there are also concerns about its influence on clinical diagnosis and decision-making. FHIR is starting to cover more and more financial data, which is great for making the financial side of healthcare more navigable for everyone. The question is: is it enough? The CARIN Alliance and the Da Vinci Project have been paving parallel paths to enable data sharing between payers, providers, and patients, but from different angles. 🔹 The CARIN Alliance took inspiration from CMS Blue Button 2.0, focusing on giving beneficiaries access to claims information—primarily from a financial perspective. Their Consumer-Directed Payer Data Exchange (CARIN IG for Blue Button®) solution aims to extend this to commercial payers, ensuring better financial data exchange. 🔹 The Da Vinci Project tackled the challenge from a clinical viewpoint. Their Payer Data Exchange (PDex) solution aligns with US Core profiles for FHIR Release 4, supporting clinical data sharing between payers, providers, and third-party apps, as required by the CMS Interoperability Final Rule. 🩺 Key Differences: What's interesting is that while both solutions have overlapping goals, they differ in their focus. 🔹 CARIN IG for Blue Button® focuses on financial claims data, using FHIR ExplanationOfBenefit (EOB). 🔹 PDex covers a broader set of clinical data using US Core profiles on FHIR R4 resources and even goes beyond US Core by offering guidance on additional elements like provenance, dispensed medications, medical devices, and mapping USCDI V1 information to FHIR profiles. 📊 Is it enough? The move towards FHIR implementation guides for interoperability is definitely a positive step, but the explanation of benefits and US Core are really minimal requirements, not full ones. Argonaut's 2024 "FHIR Write" initiative launches today, focused on continuous glucose monitoring! We're streamlining standards-based integration of CGM data into EHRs to support collaborative diabetes management. Huge thanks to Redox, Rimidi, Rhapsody, Sensotrend, and Tidepool for helping me and Brett Marquard come up to speed ahead of the project launch. I also want to share my personal pre-launch exploration to learn about CGM: 1. Got a CGM prescription and began tracking my blood sugar. 2. Mapped my CGM readings to FHIR Observation and Device resources. 3. Calculated key metrics like "time in range" as FHIR Observations 4. Created a visualization PDF based on the Ambulatory Glucose Profile, and wrapped this in a FHIR DiagnosticReport 5. Published same visualization as an interactive web view 6. Packaged all this up in a SMART Health Link for secure, structured data sharing + built-in visualization This SMART Health Link represents my past 120 days of glucose history, updated automatically and covering all core data elements described in the Diabetes Technology Society (DTS)'s iCoDE data set: ** Josh's glucose SHLink: https://lnkd.in/g2TQb5tN ** Anyone with the SHLink can access the structured FHIR resources behind the visualization. In fact, the viewer itself is a SHLink client that knows how to render the data it finds. What are the most significant obstacles to using electronic health records (EHRs)? Klas Research asked 33,000 clinicians across over 300 healthcare organizations this question and compiled their answers in the 'EHR Interoperability 2024' report. When asked specifically about their experiences with patient data from external organizations, 47% mentioned the lack of proper integrations to access EHRs. Value based care (VBC) 1.0 language was heavily oriented to language like "disruption". This language was like a punch in the mouth and was effective at building awareness of new opportunity - but disruptive punches to the jaw don't sound like a very attractive end state. It sounds pretty painful, and maybe that is one reason why VBC adoption has stagnated. VBC 2.0 needs to be about integration and partnership so that we can start to bring real value to patients and the provider organizations who serve them - and do that at scale. The pre-eminent leader in health plan clinical guidelines coming together with the most innovative AI provider of utilization management technology is a perfect example of this new paradigm. Kudos to the MCG Health and Cohere Health teams taking a leadership role to make the health care system work better for all.

Predictions for the Healthcare Analytics Space in 2025 Increased Integration Across Data Ecosystems As value-based care models continue to expand, seamless data integration across clinical, claims, and social determinants of health (SDOH) sources will become critical. Organizations will prioritize interoperability through networks like QHINs, Carequality, and CommonWell to create a unified patient view. Interoperability Will Become Non-Negotiable Regulatory and operational pressures will force healthcare organizations to embrace true interoperability, with frameworks like TEFCA, QHINs, and platforms like Carequality/CommonWell gaining momentum. Seamless data exchange will shift from a competitive edge to a baseline requirement. Shift from Retrospective to Predictive Analytics Organizations will move away from merely reporting past events and toward anticipating future risks, costs, and care needs. Predictive models will guide both operational efficiencies and patient care interventions. Demand for Transparent ROI Healthcare organizations will increasingly demand clear ROI from analytics investments, driven by financial pressures and accountability in value-based contracts.
