Let's get intimate… While considering the types of professional services companies out there, one might list the various service offerings to get better acquainted: M&A, Technology, Cyber, AI, Data and analytics, Human Capital (to include recruiting and non-recruiting activity), Strategy and Operations, Financial Advisory, and others. As a guest on my first recruitment webcast this week, I had the opportunity to share my insights on the importance of vulnerability in executive search, a field in which I have extensive experience. I believe that vulnerability, being a fundamental aspect of the human condition, should be embraced in the context of recruitment. In my view, executive search is one of the most intimate of all professional services offerings. I explained that while managing a search process, you are at the center of the hiring authority's needs, coupled with the needs of their business, the talent pool at large, and the handful of qualified candidates you engage with. During any given process, you are walking, often hand in hand, with all parties to ensure the search requirements are met. You consider all data points, including the candidate's family situation, financial situation, and overall well-being. You are also considering how the success of the search will impact your client's bottom line, as well as if and when the hire will create the most value.  It's important to understand that vulnerability is not a weakness, but a superpower. It's a signal to others that you're open to connecting with them on a deeper level, which in turn builds trust and authenticity in your professional relationships. This openness also helps you better understand yourself, leading to greater confidence and emotional intelligence. I've come from a time when vulnerability was not deemed a positive (born in the 80s, raised in the 90s), but as I look back over the past twenty years, I am more comfortable in my own skin than I've ever been. Relating to executives who also come from that place and connecting with them to improve their current situation is gratifying on so many levels. Given the transformative power of vulnerability in professional relationships, it's worth pondering: do you believe vulnerability has a place in business?
