We think a lot about UX at Durable. With AI-generated code becoming more prevalent, it's more import than ever to ask: what is the optimal UX for specifying software? While chat is the predominant interface to AI, we don't think it's particularly good for defining software requirements. That's why we've build our product from the ground-up around a document interface. In this article I dissect the pros and cons of GenAI interfaces with a focus on AI-generated software, and map out the characteristics of an ideal interface.

Reimagining Healthcare Workforce Platfforms: Turning Capital Into Labor The future isn’t just about filling shifts. It’s about scaling labor intelligently, driving better outcomes for systems, staff, and patients alike. Andreessen Horowitz and Alastair (Alex) Rampell reinforced this Vision in a recent post and it applies to the next phase of healthcare workforce evolution. Healthcare workforce marketplaces plus AI are at the tipping point of transformation, evolving into systems of record that don’t just manage labor—they optimize it. AI is paradoxically killing the Minimum Viable Product. The speed of change in the pace of product development we are experiencing due to AI is making it faster than ever to create early proof of concept products. The challenge this presents is that the value of these early products is trending towards zero. They're still valuable from a customer learning perspective, but no longer can startups expect to begin to generate and start to scale revenue from an MVP. Startups must now simultaneously expand product complexity and market penetration. In other words, the "land and expand" of start with a small part of functionality and expand to own the category is dead. You MUST have a plan to own the category (and be working on it) from the outset.

What do you think about AI in senior care? Personally, I think we have to be careful with it. When AI presents itself as human, it can be confusing for seniors who may not have strong digital literacy skills. In fact, if they think they're talking to a person and not an AI chatbot, it can be dangerous if they're having a medical emergency or issue. However, there are some helpful use cases. I think Kristen Fischer's exploration of AI here is really interesting. "Artificial intelligence may be a useful communication tool to help older adults with cancer communicate with their doctors and have more of a say in their treatment," she says. AI can provide more context or explanation about certain treatment plans and translate the patient’s needs to clinicians in situations where the patient doesn't feel understood or heard. AI will never replace professionals, but it could help patients and clinicians better understand each other. The (Healthcare) Ground Beneath Our Feet… This year it is likely that over $10 billion will be invested in the digital health sector – a robust amount, no doubt, but inconsequential when compared to the amount of capital tied up in healthcare real estate assets, which is estimated to be $1.2 trillion by Jones Lang Lasalle. Of that amount, approximately $790 billion is in the hospital sector while the remaining $490 billion is in medical office assets. It is estimated that there are 48.6k facilities with 3.4 billion square feet of healthcare real estate, 42% of which are owned by REITs and another 33% held by other private investment vehicles. Much of the digital health investment is meant to make the physical healthcare infrastructure more productive: greater operating efficiencies, greater patient throughput, more relevant personalized care models with better outcomes. As the healthcare system is being pushed to be more distributed to lower cost sites of care, accelerated now by the rapid proliferation of automation and AI capabilities, the potential impact on healthcare infrastructure assets will be profound. A SAFE and convertible note had a baby and Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati was the midwife- out popped the D-SAFE! 👶🏽🎉 A new #climatetech funding instrument was announced by Elemental Excelerator last week. One of the company’s main goals is to support smaller, up and coming companies during the awkward “Scale Gap” phase between #VC funding and natural growth. It’s called the #DSAFE (Development Simple Agreement for Future Equity) and it aims to aid the process by giving companies a small amount of cash to overcome initial risks and expenses during the developmental stages of a product launch or company. How does it work? D-SAFE has a redemption clause meaning companies can choose to have their payments offered as a loan or convert to equity at the investor’s discretion. Funders and companies will have clear communication and expectations about where the money is going and how it will be applied to either the company or the projects at hand. Financiers and companies will work together with more #transparency, and that’s a great boon for #startups and VC alike. As of this month, Elemental has already invested using D-SAFE in eight different companies, including Dimensional Energy and Origen — both companies investing in innovative and out-of-the-box solutions to environmental issues! The newest issue of The Pragmatic Engineer found a surprise uptick in eng hiring in the typically slow summer season - I'm curious to see how the macro environment impacts this uptick as we head into the fall, but I remain hopeful. I asked Gemini to give me the tldr of the article to share with my team (sorry, Gergely Orosz) and found it missed one of the most interesting pieces of the article. Gemini's highlights - Unexpected surge: Tech recruitment has seen an unusual spike in June and July, contrary to typical trends. Increased demand: Startups, especially AI-focused ones, are driving the hiring uptick. Global phenomenon: This trend isn't just limited to the US; Europe is also experiencing increased recruitment activity. Reasons for hiring: Companies are backfilling positions, investing in growth due to improved financials, and responding to increased VC funding. Challenges remain: While the job market is improving, finding qualified candidates and offering competitive compensation remains difficult for many companies. What I found most interesting - The nature of the backfills: the article finds that a lot of new headcount are actually backfills of folks that were "over-slashed" during rounds of layoffs. Not entirely surprising with the "trim the fat" and "rebuild lean" mentality, but interesting nonetheless. Stepping into adjacent containers, digital, physical, magical to just, oh I don't know, keep it spicy. Utilizing TouchDesigner, AI software, code, and my original designs, I explore the intersection of the digital and the organic– drawing inspiration from technoromanticism, ancient Greek sirens, and synesthesia.   At its heart, this series is an exploration of the complex relationship between death and _l'appel du vide_—the call of the void. This psychological phenomenon, which tempts humans with the allure of self-destruction, is mirrored in the ancient myth of the sirens. The siren's song, like the void, is a lure that challenges us to confront our deepest impulses—the pull towards oblivion and the simultaneous yearning for transcendence. I intentionally draw a parallel between _l'appel du vide_ and the siren’s call, as both are manifestations of our intrinsic fascination with the unknown, with that which lies beyond the boundaries of safety and rationality." Open AI GPT-4o announced yesterday, fascinating. Omni modal, one mind with text, image, video 2x faster 50% cheaper 5x higher rate limits AI is moving so fast. I'm thinking about what it means for manufacturing and enterprise data. Used another of my favorite software tools Loom to record a quick 'Opinion' while watching some of their Youtube video demo, showing it reading a temperature variation chart and acting as a simple data analyst. What do you think GPT 4o and the direction implies for enterprise data stacks and manufacturing AI? My takeaway - we need to rethink data architectures from 'how do I design for crazy busy humans' to 'how do I design for AIs with near infinite time to read charts and reports and finally summarize/interact with humans'. Reflecting on how much human-work goes into defining the simplest possible red/yellow/green KPI from a mountain of data, like getting everything into MQTT for a final OEE score. We do so much to help a human make a decision spending 10 seconds or less glancing at a final graph or number. When instead imagine using those 10 seconds the human has to be able to ask/interact with an AI that can have read 1000's of graphs/reports in advance, built on rich contextualized data, just to best answer your question. Open-source models can be a strong lever for increasing gross margins at AI companies, especially those that have hefty cost structures (e.g., enterprise sales orgs that require significant customer success or implementation resources, as well forward-deployed AI services models common in healthcare and life sciences). One of many reasons to maintain a modular and flexible stack with minimal dependencies when building an AI company. One conversation we should be having more, especially in healthcare: is this an AI problem or a policy problem? A big challenge in American healthcare stems from the reality that our healthcare strategy changes with every administration. Throwing AI at problems that are well-addressed by policy innovation (e.g., AI for payer-provider RCM war) feels like a gross misallocation of resources. Solution sets are rarely zero sum – in truth, most problems will require policy, tech, and human interventions, but it's worth asking ourselves whether AI is the best solve when we have a multitude of options.

During his 2025 CES keynote, Jensen Huang outlined what I call the <Paradigm of Jolting ⚡️Technologies > in AI architectures. Back in 1999, I was introduced to the concept of S-curves while studying Management of Innovation at UCD in Dublin. It provided a framework for understanding how technologies grow, plateau, and get surpassed. Ray Kurzweil’s The Singularity is Near reshaped my thinking—showing how exponential technologies compound to create super-exponentials. Today, we’re witnessing it. AI is not plateauing. Instead, its power is accelerating exponentially faster, with innovations in pre-training, post-training, and real-time reasoning shortening the doubling rate of intelligence. I know skepticism abounds—as it always does with disruption—but I firmly believe AI will drive a fundamental, and likely abrupt, shift in how we approach innovation across science and engineering. This shift will ripple across society and economies, demanding a thoughtful approach to managing the change. Here’s what I believe is critical for navigating this <era of jolting technologies>: 1. Adopt a change mindset: Agility, curiosity, and openness to the unknown are no longer optional—they’re survival skills. 2. Slow down to move forward: Presence and reflection will be essential for navigating rapid change. Slowing down allows us to act with clarity, creativity, and purpose amidst the noise. 3. Reimagine work, education, and careers: As AI transforms industries, we must fundamentally rethink how we learn, contribute, and create value—on a massive scale. The abruptness of this change will stem from today’s skepticism. But I believe that embracing these principles can turn disruption into opportunity and help us thrive in the new paradigm. Move over, artificial intelligence (AI) —Applied Improv (AI) is the real secret sauce to building high-performing teams! 😎 Here’s what happened at yesterday's online workshop with MedTech Actuator that I had the pleasure of facilitating. 🎭 We used the principles of Applied Improv (AI) to help build high-performing teams. These techniques go beyond comedy—they're powerful tools for enhancing teamwork, communication, and adaptability in any dynamic environment. 👍 👉 We kicked things off by exploring the idea of judgment—how quickly we judge ourselves and others, often without realising it. A simple "thumb game" highlighted just how often and quickly we fall into this habit. When we STOP judging, we're often surprised by how much more we can learn and how much deeper our connections become. 👂 👀 👃 Next, we moved into a mindfulness exercise centred on **noticing & observing**. It was a simple meditation, and incredibly powerful in helping us become more aware of our surroundings (hello birds 🐦 and thunderstorms ⛈ outside our windows) and our own internal states. This heightened awareness is crucial for any team striving for excellence. 💯 One of the highlights was the interactive ( dare I say performance 🤔 ) of **"Yes, But / Yes, And / Yes, What I Like About That"** game. This exercise was all about shifting from a mindset of limitation to one of possibility. The shift we saw between the three examples was immediate and eye-opening! Practising embracing each other’s ideas and building on them, is a core skill for any collaborative environment. 🐳 Finally, we delved into the concept of **status**—how it influences our interactions and communication within a team. We explored how understanding and being mindful of status behaviour and verbal status moves can help us create more inclusive and balanced conversations (“I just read Moby Dick” - ask me about this exercise!). Each of these topics could have been explored in much greater depth, but my hope is that this workshop served as a taster, sparking a desire to learn and practise more. 🌊 Through the Zoom chat 'chatterfall,' participants were asked to share one word to describe the short session, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive.
