What do you do if your team members are resistant to your leadership as a tech leader?
I remember witnessing a leader, visibly frustrated, demanding immediate trust among his team. This leader habitually ignored feedback, strived to outshine everyone, and made authoritarian decisions. He acknowledged the ongoing poor and disrespectful behavior of certain team members who prioritized personal ambitions over team and business objectives. His lack of corrective action led many to suspect that he was in favor of, if not promoting, this detrimental culture. I mention this negative story to highlight the importance of fostering trust through personal connections, attentive listening, and setting an example for others to follow. Trust is not gauged by our actions in times of ease but by our conduct in the face of adversity.

What do you do if your project team is resistant to your ideas?
It starts with why but resolution often comes down to relationships, leadership, and mission. The easy answer is for everyone to share their perspectives. Sometimes, the gap isn't as significant as it initially seemed. Teammates can also see things very differently at a fundamental level. The best results tend to come from learning and being open-minded. This tends to work best with strong relationships. When teammates are comfortable discussing differences, there's a great chance to reach resolution. If the differences can't be worked out, the team can appear leaderless. Team members can work in opposing directions. Strong leadership and alignment with the team's mission become even more important. Great teams welcome differences.

How does a strong management team increase company valuation?
In addition to the quality of the management team personnel, the structure, scalability and succession plan matter to acquirers. For example, we failed to sell our company the first time we put it on the market due to acquirers concerns about the scalability of the organization. The CEO and Founder would be exiting the business within 6-12 months but there weren't proven succession options. We restructured the exec team and successfully sold the company about 18 months later.

How can you improve team morale as a System Development leader?
There’s a lot of positive energy that comes from the why. Why are we developing this software? When our team experienced the real work that the future users were doing, they understood why we were developing the software in specific ways. Throughout the project, we would discuss how we would improve the users’ work and lives by helping them do what was difficult to do today. This is even more impactful when you’re developing software for people serving your customers. In that case, your team can see the impact on the future users and customers at the same time.
