Through the Cliff Appreciates program, UH CEO Cliff A. Megerian, MD, FACS, Jane and Henry Meyer Chief Executive Officer Distinguished Chair, likes to recognize our non-physician caregivers who stand out for living the UH values with the Bravo Awards. Today’s caregiver spotlight focuses on Jason Pirtz, RN, who is being recognized as a Bravo Award winner for providing service excellence and demonstrating an outstanding commitment to patient care and engagement as Chief Operating Officer (COO) for UH Cleveland Medical Center. Amidst a hectic schedule, Jason noticed a patient looking lost and took the time to personally escort him to his appointment at UH Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute. This thoughtful action made a significant impression on the patient, who was so moved by the experience that he wrote to our CEO to express his gratitude. The patient's note highlighted the exceptional level of care and concern demonstrated by Jason, which he has shared with many others. By leading with such compassion and dedication, Jason not only provided excellent service but also positively represented the ethos of patient engagement at UH. We decided to chat with Jason to learn more about him and how he lives the UH values: As COO, how do you live the UH values? Working for a large healthcare organization brings amazing opportunities, but I don’t believe that we can provide the best care possible for the patients we serve without first focusing on teamwork and a consistent drive toward service excellence. Ultimately, I feel that it is my responsibility to create an environment of teamwork that sets our caregivers up for success. How do you support the needs of the various caregiver teams? This is one of my favorite questions to answer as I feel the ultimate commitment to all of UH Cleveland Medical Center’s caregivers. Whether it’s advocating for new technology, creating a safe environment, streamlining workflows or upgrading our facility, everything we do is important to our mission. I live by the motto that “If you are not serving a patient then you better be serving someone who is.” What do you like best about working at UH? I have a great appreciation for the relationships that I have built within the organization over the past seven years. The caregivers who I work with are not just employees -- they are my friends and colleagues. I trust them, and these relationships are the reason why we are able to do the very challenging work that we do. What’s been your most memorable experience at UH? I think my most memorable moment was UH’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. When I was very new in my role at UH Cleveland Medical Center, I had the opportunity to serve as Chief Operations Officer within the Hospital Incident Command structure. I hear a lot about service members being unsure how their military experience will transition into a civilian career. Some have an idea what type of field they want to purse, and Andrew explains how the military provided opportunities for him to learn and train for his future profession. For the ones who struggle to find a quality fit, just know the attributes and skills that apply to all jobs can be found within the uniform. Teamwork, leadership, reliability, trust, adaptability, and many more are just as important as the job requirements. In my personal experience, I've found the best employees and teammates are the ones who bring a positive attitude and are willing to grow. Any leader can teach certain job skills and the job duties can be reinforced one step at a time. However, having the willingness to learn and being a genuinely great person is the type of individual I want on my team. Lets find solutions to lingering issues. Healthcare is a privilege that employers who can afford to subsidize it and people can afford to pay for it in America. If the government provided funding, not just tax incentives, to small businesses and businesses in general we could open up care to lower, middle income families as well as self employed. I would assume this would be more affordable than revamping the entire system. But interesting to see the numbers Thoughts?

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) announced that Baylor Scott & White Health (BSWH) plans to terminate their agreements on July 1 unless modifications are made. If an agreement isn't reached, Blue Cross members will lose access to BSWH's physicians, hospitals, and facilities. Key Details: Impact: Without an agreement, BSWH physicians, hospitals, and facilities will be out-of-network for BCBSTX members starting July 1. Scale: BSWH is Texas’s largest nonprofit health system with 51 hospitals and 7,300 physicians. BCBSTX is the largest health insurer in Texas. History: Similar disputes have arisen before but were resolved at the last minute. Why It Matters: Post-pandemic labor and supply costs have surged, straining healthcare finances. 3 Secrets to Hospital Financial Success... Is Ochsner Health's Innovation the Future Path for Hospitals? Ochsner Health headquartered in New Orleans with 40+ facilities across the Gulf South was able to lower healthcare costs by $56M across 500K of their patients. Ochsner then took $45M of those savings and gave it to the doctors and other healthcare providers. Ochsner accomplished these savings by 1) reducing ER visits and hospitalizations via improved outpatient primary care, 2) taking on financial risk for the total cost of care for a patient population and 3) decreasing disease. That's right... Ochsner accomplished these financial savings while IMPROVING patient care: --88 percent of patients with diabetes had their condition well controlled vs. a national average of 50-60 percent. --85% of patients with hypertension had their blood pressure well controlled vs. a national average of 20 percent. Why? Of all the hospital systems in America, why did Ochsner choose to move away from reactive, fee-for-service care? It's because New Orleans and the Gulf South do not have a lot of patients with high-reimbursing commercial insurance through employer-sponsored plans. Most of Ochsner's patients are on much lower-paying Medicare and Medicaid insurance plans--forcing Ochsner to 'move outside their 4 walls', take risk and decrease pathology. This fact illustrates that high employer reimbursements are enabling most hospital systems in America to remain reactive and not focused on preventing disease. I hole heartedly agree Benjamin Schwartz, MD, MBA. Anywhere else in an economic system, innovators who can deliver a better product at lower costs are almost always rewarded with greater market share, and frequently set the direction for the future of a product or industry. Not so in healthcare. I think that Terry Adirim, MD, MPH, MBA (below) hit the nail on the head when she references for-profit health insurers in the mix. Although policies have been enacted with the idea of providing better healthcare at lower costs, they have always given the job of administering those policies to a middleman (insurance companies) whose motives are at odds with the objective they claim to be administering. Profit! Innovation is not in the best interest of the payer. They profit through the inefficiency of the system. Until this lack of alignment between quality patient care at low costs and for-profit health care plans is addressed, process innovation and improvement will only be able to nibble at the edges.

The Defense Health Agency (DHA) has awarded 11 companies positions under the unrestricted vendor pool of a potential 10-year, $43 billion follow-on contract to provide medical staffing support services for U.S. military health care facilities. The Department of Defense said Wednesday Medical Q-Coded Support and Services-Next Generation is a multiple-award, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract that calls for contractors to recruit, qualify and provide qualified medical contract personnel to support direct patient care and other health activities at DHA hospitals and clinics across the U.S. and its territories. The performance period will kick off in June and run through the end of May 2034. The awardees are: Decypher Health Services, Epic Government, KBR (NYSE: KBR), Loyal Source Government Services, Luke & Associates, Matrix Providers, Optumserve Health Services, Spectrum Healthcare Resources, The Arora Group, U.S. Got People and Vesa Health & Technology.
