It is great to see a fifth state implement an EPR program but it would be even better if we had a national program that addressed the shortfalls of the current recycling system. Imagine if the Clean Air Act had been a state by state law. There would still be states selling leaded gasoline, 50 years later, because it is cheaper to make. National recycling legislation with minimum content requirements would provide an effective guide for companies to follow. Real results, not more discussions, surveys and committees are required.

Glad to see my state has joined the EPR ranks for packaging. This is a great first step in legislation. To really expand recycling, mandatory recycled content minimums must be enacted! If the end material has value, it will be collected and recycled. Trying to increase recycling rates by increasing collection and supply is not the answer. Home Depot is making a good decisions by eliminating expanded polystyrene (EPS or styrofoam) and PVC film from packaging used in its private-label products. Next step is to have all suppliers make this change when possible and where it makes sense. Both of these plastics are very difficult to recycle from an economic standpoint, not from a scientific standpoint. EPS is about 98% air, so transportation costs are very high and takes up a lot of storage space. Most films are difficult to recycle, especially non-polyethylene films. I find it interesting that Home Depot talks of 6 million cubic feet of EPS and 39 million sqft of film, which sounds like a huge number, but is about 3,000 tons of EPS and 3,000 tons of PVC film. This is a move in the right direction, but let's also remember that a large number of Home Depots do not recycle their plastic packaging waste. #recycling #plasticsrecycling #sustainability #EPS #PVC

The EPS industry continues to expand opportunities for and access to recycling. The investments in infrastructure and awareness in recent years are driving improved performance. The insulative and protective attributes of EPS are complemented by its sustainable benefit as a low GHG (under 10), low energy and water consuming material that outperforms alternatives in 90% of LCAs.
