How can we better understand the challenges facing safety net clinics to increase access to affordable primary care in Central Texas? The primary care safety net is a key resource that supports equitable access to affordable healthcare services for the uninsured and underinsured - yet access to timely, responsive care remains out of reach for many Central Texans. Earlier this year, we partnered with Episcopal Health Foundation to evaluate the the primary care landscape for un-and underinsured residents in Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Travis, and Williamson Counties. Through the Primary Care Capacity Assessment, we studied factors that impact access to primary care, including geography, patient demographics, services offered, and operational challenges facing safety net clinics. Over 48% of physicians report at least 1 symptom of burnout. So what is the real underlying problem? Most symptoms reported are related to administrative tasks unrelated to patient care. Some organizations like Texas Children's Pediatrics are implementing solutions such as virtual scribes, implementing well-being committees, and improving their tech stack such as AI note takers and streamlined forms to reduce intake work and focus more on face-to-face patient interactions.
