This 👂 podcast episode and insight’s from a16z Bio + Health's Julie Yoo spoke so clearly to the fundamental challenge facing both 🩺 clinicians and 🏥 healthcare systems.  There is a huge disconnect between supply, in the availability of clinicians, and demand, in the increasing volume and complexity of healthcare needs. -     36% of physicians plan to reduce their hours next year according to the AMA -     48% of physicians reported feeling burned out in a 2024 Medscape survey At the same time, the demographic baby boomer bubble and steady increase in the prevalence of major chronic disease, which consumes up to 90% of healthcare expenditures according to some estimates, is driving demand. With this context, Yoo points to a major opportunity for AI adoption in healthcare in 2025. Yeah, a VC hyping a wave of new AI companies that will replace the decades of training and experience of clinicians, the skeptic would say.  But Yoo is thoughtful in pointing to the role AI can play, and is already playing, through solutions such as ambient, autonomous scribe solutions (of which local star Abridge is leading the pack) in not replacing, but freeing up productivity for clinicians. There is so much unstructured context in both the complexity of disease and treatment options and the social/emotional considerations that we shouldn't be looking for AI to *replace* clinicians. But companies are getting better at finding the structured, repetitive and time-consuming places where AI tools can *help* clinicians. Nearly two-thirds of doctors cited bureaucratic tasks as the leading contributor to burnout. Rigorously trained-AI driven solutions can be a force multiplier for clinicians, and I’ve seen several interviews where nurses and doctors go as far as to say some of these solutions are ”restoring their joy in practicing medicine”. Our health is precious; and we rightly want any technology engaging with it to be developed thoughtfully and thoroughly tested. This requires top AI talent and diverse and realistic training data. Organizing to stop the despicable 1% is adding 30% of costs to everyone - especially #ruralhealth 👉 #EMR Transformation has put some hospitals out of business and in some communities, when the hospital closes, the whole community shuts down 👉 #Transformation this group sees on the horizon includes demand for change only intensifying, doing more with fewer providers, addressing #documentation challenges, #AI should focus on removing the hassle of the little things 👉 MAJOR RISK AHEAD - Will #transformation defined by CMS + #BigTech lead to a loss of simplifying the provider-patient experience? Will documentation to meet #VBC demands only escalate due to the 'potential' of what technology offers? And therefore, will health disparities only expand due to the inability of #ruralhealth to keep up? That’s why I was excited to join Chrissy, Ash Zenooz, MD, and Luba Greenwood, J.D. on the latest episode of the Second Opinion Media podcast. Here are three key takeaways. 1) The traditional view of what makes the “right” CEO is changing. Boards need to look beyond what CEO candidates have done and where they’ve worked. A first-time CEO who understands your challenges and offers creative solutions might be a better bet than someone who’s been there and done that. 2) CEO success is a give and take. To deliver results, your next leader needs to bring adaptability, reliability, and quick decision making — an experienced executive chair, and patience to build the proper team will pay long term dividends. 3) Relationships beat transactions. Just as transactional relationships hurt healthcare, transactional CEO searches hurt companies. Finding the right leader is about understanding candidates as people: their backgrounds, thinking, and outcomes. Invest the time to build a relationship with your candidates, and do it in person. Great Post Bob ... I have said a few times... "The role of Supply Chain in healthcare is evolving significantly, shifting from a transactional role to a strategic function with a direct impact on financial performance. Supply Chain now has a presence at the C-level, underscoring its importance in driving margins and supporting sustainable financial models. By adopting a holistic approach to expense management and overseeing all non-labor spending, Supply Chain leaders can create substantial value.And its not all created equal. Exmaple: reducing costs by just 5% can yield the same profit impact as increasing revenue by 100%, highlighting the efficiency of cost management over revenue initiatives in improving profitability. This transformation aligns closely with strategic imperatives around delivering higher value with fewer resources, supporting revenue generation, and enhancing competitive advantage. Scalability and sustainability are two of the primary barriers to healthcare innovation. A great tool or strategy won't succeed if it can't expand past the small pilot and prove itself across a larger network or population. As #HLTH2024 kicked off this week in Las Vegas, HealthLeaders' Eric Wicklund is there to cover it all. He says that behind the glitz and glamour and the celebrities gracing the main stage, questions remain: What new idea really will take hold and change a struggling industry for the better? And what hard questions should executives be asking themselves as they evaluate each new technology and strategy? I get Dr. Yang's concern about large, wealthier health systems adopting AI sooner than smaller, poorer organizations, but this is actually a good thing...unless your time horizon is myopically short. Big organizations, with much larger budgets and sophisticated IT teams, can afford to take risks, make mistakes, and test out exciting (but still unproven) emerging tech while smaller organizations certainly can't (for the most part). So let the behemoths take all the risk, do the heavy lifting first, and then smaller organizations get to adopt truly proven solutions at lower risks/prices...once these have run the Kaiser, Mayo, Intermountain, etc., gauntlet.
