A decade from today – will Health records be maintained and available as easily as Social media? Electronic health records (EHRs) first replaced paper medical records in the 1960s. As the EHR market continues to consolidate, cloud adoption increases. Deloitte Center for Health Solutions conducted a survey of 38 US-based College of Healthcare Information Management Executive (CHIME). Nineteen percent of the CHIME survey respondents were dissatisfied or very dissatisfied with their organization’s EHR system. 70% of respondents say their current EHR system wouldn’t be able to meet future needs. Interviewees noted that healthcare consumers want both convenient access to health care and good relationships with their physicians. But if they had to choose one, they would choose convenience. The electronic health record must transition from an emphasis on a person’s medical record to an emphasis on a person’s plan for health. Rather than recording what a patient is encountering, the EHR should help the clinician plan a course of action to improve the patient’s health or keep them healthy. The move toward more AI and cloud adoption can address many EHR needs for clinicians and consumers. Future EHR solutions should be designed to cater to the needs of all users, especially the needs of consumers and clinicians. It should leverage the latest technology such as cloud-native, platform ecosystems to improve consumers’ health and wellness. Looking to develop your EHR solutions? US President Donald Trump’s decision to appoint Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to lead the newly proposed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is set to bring innovative change to the federal government. With Musk’s background in disruptive technology and Ramaswamy’s experience in biotech and business strategy, the Department aims to address issues of government inefficiency, streamline operations, and cut unnecessary costs. Trump has tasked DOGE with finding ways to simplify processes and improve effectiveness across federal agencies, aiming for substantial results by 2026. As Federal FY'25 approaches, IT leaders across agencies are refreshing their IT roadmaps to include innovative Data and AI technologies. We are supporting FDA ORA with reimagining and resetting their 3-5 Yr IT roadmap. ❇ So how does one (or a team) go about getting the IT Roadmap update job done? 🗄 ↳In short, it requires careful planning, socializing, coordinating, facilitating, and sponsor support. Facilitating the roadmap conversations, processing the information collected, and developing the roadmap artifacts are all non-trivial given the various departments ("centers" in ORA's case), seasoned/diverse audience, and tight schedules/timelines. 🏬 On this journey, we have learned a few things and ironed out our approach. I want to share some of those best practices and approach breakdown: ▶ Develop Roadmap Questionnaire - ↳ Use this to get stakeholders thinking about opportunities and challenges ↳ Focus on 3 categories - Strategic Direction, Business Needs & Challenges, IT Investments & Priorities ↳ Share a week prior to first session so that they have time to poll their teams ▶ Facilitate Roadmap Development Session - ↳ Invite agency and department leaders and stakeholders ↳ Set the context and expectations (allow sponsor to speak as well) ↳ Open the floor to inputs/ideas based on the questionnaire ↳ Ask participants to forget the usual constraints (like budget) and think BIG ▶ Decompose Vision and Objectives - ↳ Decompose the conversation down to a vision and set of objectives ↳ Each department can have their own vision and objectives ↳ Capture the technologies preferences, risk appetite, and priorities ▶ Facilitate Vision and Objectives Validation Session - ↳ Confirm and fine-tune the department vision and objectives with IT leaders ↳ Each department may have their own vision and objectives, and that is ok ▶ Facilitate Initiatives and Activities Session - ↳ Align current (based on the legacy roadmap) and/or identify new initiatives and corresponding activities for each objective ↳ Assign FY(s) to each activity and capture any dependencies ▶ Develop final Roadmap deliverables - ↳ Bring of all of the information gathered together to develop the 3-5 year IT roadmap (may be in the form of infographics w/ timelines) ↳ Document and provide analysis details and themes to compliment the roadmap artifact(s) There you have it folks; now you know how to plan and execute an IT Roadmap update exercise at a federal agency/department.
