Great news for operators! A more rational CBRS DPA activation methodology has been approved. This will ensure more uptime for broadband fixed wireless providers because channel grants will not be suspended as often. Though there are 15 possible CBRS channels losing one or more does not guarantee that an operator can easily get a replacement or a replacement channel adjacent to other channels. Adjacency is required by many smaller radio vendors to concatenate channels that enable effective broadband speeds and it helps even the efficiency of larger vendors. For those using GAA because they have no PALs or are supplementing their PAL bandwidth with GAA, losing channels forces more users on the remaining GAA channels and thus, interference. This act proves that spectrum sharing is viable and not detrimental to incumbents when deployed with reasonable controls.

Valuing the cost of licensed spectrum as part of an auction has long been an esoteric process for the telecom industry. One of the key considerations in pricing spectrum licenses for a given area is the economic value of each mobile end user in that area. Thus, $/MHz/pop is commonly used to quantify spectrum auction results where 'pop' refers to the population in the license area; more populated areas typically command a higher price and more competition. We at Tiami Networks believe that beyond 5G use cases such as integrated sensing and communications can alter how spectrum is valued. If spectrum is now used to also perform radar sensing, then there are instances where unpopulated or de-populated regions are still highly valuable for spectrum acquisition. Needless to say, spectrum values in densely populated could go up even more, resulting in a doubling of total perceived value. Thus, $/MHz/pop may need to be replaced with $/MHz/(pop+sensing points). Slightly delayed, but this is a write up I did of the October #SpectrumAmericas event, hosted by Spectrum for the Future, an advisory client of mine. (Click through to download the PDF from the site). Obviously since that date, the US Elections have taken place, and the new incoming administration is intending to make Brendan Carr the head of the Federal Communications Commission. While Carr seemed keen to renew the FCC's auction authority over the supply of spectrum, he may well wish to scutinise the demand side more carefully. It is now clear that mobile data demand growth is slowing down, including in the US, where even Ericsson's optimistic, XR-fuelled forecasts have been lowered, at 16% CAGR for smartphones. Even if you take those figures - or CTIA's - at face value, it is increasingly apparent that demand is highly localised, rather than evenly spread over wide areas. A great deal of #5G use is indoors, in particular, which increasingly needs dedicated indoor systems - something that Verizon and other carriers have been pushing hard for recently. In addition, there is no urgent need for spectrum driven by future #6G, which is likely to appear later rather than sooner (maybe 2032) and may well again be concentrated in specific high-density areas and supported by satellite access. Hopefully, the FCC will shift from its analogy of a "spectrum pipeline" to a more precise and targeted "spectrum sprinkler" that can irrigate the exact times and places than need watering with new frequencies. https://lnkd.in/eHmbpAky
