The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has allocated $42 billion in mega infrastructure grants to enhance critical projects across the country, funded through programs like INFRA and the Mega Program. These grants aim to modernize key infrastructure, including highways, bridges, ports, and rail systems, boosting transportation efficiency and addressing urgent needs in both urban and rural areas. Additionally, this funding will stimulate economic growth, reduce environmental impacts, and improve connectivity, particularly benefiting smaller and underserved communities. Prominent companies leading these efforts include: 🛫 The Walsh Group - Walsh Construction & Archer Western: Involved in the O'Hare Airport Modernization and LAX Terminal Expansion, both multi-billion-dollar projects to improve airport capacity and operations. 🛣️ Granite Construction: Spearheading the I-405 Improvement Project in Southern California, a $1.9 billion initiative to reduce traffic congestion, as well as the California High-Speed Rail project, one of the largest infrastructure undertakings in U.S. history. 🌉 Kiewit: Key in projects like the Denny Substation in Seattle, valued at $200 million, and the Gordie Howe International Bridge, a multi-billion-dollar bridge connecting Detroit and Windsor to enhance trade routes. 🛬 HENSEL PHELPS: Notably contributed to the San Francisco International Airport Terminal 1 Renovation and the U.S. Census Bureau Headquarters, a $331 million project featuring advanced sustainability technology. 🚉 Tutor Perini Corporation: Worked on major urban developments like New York City’s Hudson Yards Platform Project and the Purple Line Extension in Los Angeles, expanding the metro system to improve public transit infrastructure. These companies are well-positioned to continue their role in transforming U.S. infrastructure, leveraging the federal grants to undertake more ambitious projects that will shape the country’s transportation landscape for years to come.

ENR 2024 Southeast Best Projects Projects honored in the regional competition demonstrate how the industry can innovate and overcome challenges. More than 120 projects were submitted to ENR Southeast’s annual Best Projects competition this year, roughly a 50% increase in submissions compared with 2023. This year’s Project of the Year finalists, include a glass-clad urban mixed-use complex, a greenfield railroad project and a sustainable, future-ready warehouse. They are all different projects with one big trait in common: They were exceptionally well managed and well built. Notable examples include: Brasfield & Gorrie, LLC - Atlanta - Midtown Union for Granite Properties. (The three-tower complex was completed below budget and ahead of schedule). DPR Construction - Raleigh-Durham-Chapel hill - United Therapeutics Corporation. (Must meet exacting standards for 24/7 temperature control, making a net-zero design an especially challenging goal). Brightline Trains new rail line into Orlando International Airport threaded a needle of existing infrastructure and utilities, an HNTB project set to have a $6.4-billion impact on the state’s economy. Skanska - Raleigh - Wake Technical Community College. The new Central Energy Plant that features geothermal and solar capacity and was constructed with sustainable materials and features nearly 300 500-ft-deep geothermal wells and 56 miles of piping. Willis A. Smith Construction, Inc. - Sarasota - Marie Selby Botanical Gardens Designed around an 80-ft tree, the Living Energy Access Facility (LEAF). Know your worth, I wish more trades people would stand up to leadership when they assume that you are just a doer and they are the sayers. Employers view me as just a welder, I am not, I am a CWI/CWE and my value is high because of this, smart people fail this test all the time. Sitting high and mighty behind your masters degree without putting your money where your mouth is, doesn't impress me and usually means I will need to explain my job to you at a grade school level, but I am just a dumb welder. Please don't think I don't value education, I do. But most trades people have masters degrees in doing, and can get a job done without your assistance, we rely on our skills to get the job done and that's where our true value shines. Your skills have a monetary value and you should be compensated fairly for them and settling for less decreases your value and sets a precedence in the industry. There is a minimum wage, not a maximum. Know your worth!

👷‍♀️ 👷‍♂️ Top 150 Contractors for 2024 👷‍♂️ 👷‍♀️ The Top 150 Contractors for 2024 list was just released yesterday, showcasing the industry’s top performers. Turner Construction Company leads the pack with nearly $17B in revenue, followed by The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company with $11.1B and STO Building Group with $11B. This is a key snapshot of the leading companies shaping the construction landscape this year. Compared to the 2023 list, companies like Clark Construction Group and HENSEL PHELPS have seen significant growth, while Gilbane Building Company also saw a rise in its ranking. These shifts reflect a competitive and dynamic market, driven by major projects and strategic expansions. Further down the list, some large firms have made significant moves. Clayco and Suffolk Construction have all experienced notable growth, climbing the ranks with billions in revenue. Companies like Alston Construction and Choate Construction Company have managed to secure higher spots through expanded project portfolios and strong market performance. These upward movements demonstrate that even outside the top 10, there’s fierce competition and remarkable progress happening among the largest construction firms. Among the companies appearing on both the 2023 and 2024 lists, Austin Industries saw the highest percentage revenue increase at 42.6%, showcasing impressive growth and expansion.
