Roll-over of 2025 output quotas the only good way out for OPEC+ This week, OPEC+ leaders have been engaged in high-level discussions with Iraqi and Kazakh officials, addressing the critical issue of overproduction within the group. The originally scheduled December 1 meeting has now been postponed to December 5, underscoring the importance of these deliberations. With non-OPEC supply expected to outpace global demand growth next year, increasing by nearly 1 million barrels per day year-on-year, OPEC+ is likely to maintain its current production cuts for at least the next three months. This approach aims to sustain the backwardation seen in the markets, reflecting tight near-term supply conditions. Looking further ahead, US #crude production is anticipated to peak in Q4 2025. However, deepwater offshore projects are set to challenge OPEC+ barrels in the medium to long term, driven by expanding output from Brazil and Guyana. The reactions / responses noted: 1. The benefit to #Nigeria of an estimated ~ $550 million infrastructure relative to Nigeria's own competing gas export projects. 2. Ability of the project to attract the requisite funding in the face of Energy Transition pressures. 3. Why the other regional gas export projects, such as the West Africa Gas Pipeline (WAGP), hadn't delivered similar returns to #ghana seen in Equatorial Guinea. 4. Possibility of political turmoil in a post-Biya Cameroon with a high likelihood of derailing the project. Heck! OPEC and its allies have been withholding supplies in a bid to prop up prices, but that’s seen the group losing market share to rivals including U.S. shale producers. IEA---- Global balances would flip to a surplus in the fourth quarter should OPEC stick to its plan to return production.

I was pleased to represent E.DSO at the 16th Citizens' Energy Forum (https://lnkd.in/emfS8HnX) and 3rd Regulatory Roundtable on Energy Policy for Consumers at the end of last week in Budapest. First and foremost, I would like to express my appreciation to the European Commission for its continual engagement with citizens and stakeholder groups as it develops a Citizens' Energy Package and other consumer-focused legislation and initiatives in this still very new Commission. There was an emphasis on a just transition, i.e. moving to a more sophisticated energy system in an environmentally sustainable and socially responsible way that has buy-in from consumers because they can see benefits. This can mean help for the vulnerable; facilitation for prosumers, energy sharing and energy communities; and making it easy for consumers to benefit from dynamic price contracts and flexibility. But, this only scratches the surface of the many discussions and break-out groups over the two days. It is worth pointing out that positive changes to the benefit of consumers will require DSOs to do things – be it allowing for greater VRES on the grid (going from 70% to 80%); adaptions for energy sharing, V2G, heat pumps, smart appliances (and consumers providing flexibility and benefiting from it) – and consumers' EVs require new connections for charging points. The Council of European Energy Regulators (CEER) mentioned that network tariffs that give the right signals to consumers are part of the solution. More broadly, we need network tariffs, indeed a regulatory framework and financing, that allow the investment that can make all this happen. So, a Citizens’ Energy Package should not be thought about in isolation from what is happening on the electricity distribution grid. Finally, on a personal note, great to catch up with so many from the European Commission, EU Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER), regulators, citizen-focused energy stakeholders, and retailer and other DSO associations (CEDEC- European Federation of Local & Regional Energy Companies; GEODE - The voice of local energy distributors across Europe; EU DSO Entity). "At current oil and associated gas prices the U.S. tight oil sector cannot maintain current production levels, pay dividends to investors, service and/or de-leverage long term debt, which is still growing, and cannot prepare financially for its enourmous retirement (P,A &D) costs coming in the future. Real "breakeven" prices required for the sector to pay all of it's debt and plug all its wells is closer to $85 a barrel and $5 per MMBTU, sustained for a prolong period. " Uh oh. The only problem with this analysis is that the oil industry has no intention of paying its "enormous retirement costs" Even with that said, with the Saudis threatening to put more oil on the market, US producers are in a bit of a tight post for the time being.
