Changing treatment patterns for hepatocellular carcinoma: A Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results–Medicare study out on ACS Cancer This retrospective cohort study used SEER-Medicare data to analyze treatment patterns and outcomes for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) between 2014 and 2019, covering the period when several new therapies were approved. Among 11,766 patients, about 60% received treatment within a year, with stable use of local therapies like transplantation and resection. However, systemic therapy use slightly declined, while sorafenib use dropped sharply from 84.5% to 41.3% with the introduction of new therapies. Overall survival (OS) improved for patients diagnosed later (2019) and for those receiving systemic therapies first, with median OS of 12.0 months for systemic treatment and 23.6 months for local therapy. The NCI’s Healthcare Delivery Research Program (HDRP) invites you to read a recent paper entitled, “Bridging clinical informatics and implementation science to improve cancer symptom management in ambulatory oncology practices: experiences from the IMPACT consortium.” (https://go.nih.gov/eTQba9n). Co-authored by Drs. Sandra A. Mitchell, Roxanne Jensen, and Ashley Wilder Smith, this paper highlights the crosstalk required between informatics and implementation scientists within the Improving the Management of symPtoms during And following Cancer Treatment (IMPACT) Consortium to scale up the use of electronic health record (EHR)-based symptom surveillance and evidence-based symptom management interventions in routine oncology care. HDRP promotes research that aims to understand the experiences of people affected by cancer and to facilitate optimal care and outcomes across the care continuum. Funded by the Cancer MoonshotSM, HDRP leads efforts supporting research that would “minimize cancer treatment’s debilitating side effects” via the Consortium. IMPACT is designed to evaluate the implementation of systematic symptom management in cancer care delivery. The consortium’s overall goal is to develop evidence that will guide efforts to improve symptom control for cancer patients during treatment and survivorship to build a foundation for effective cancer symptom management in routine clinical care. Standardizing Still’s Disease Research: Global Data Harmonization Needed A recent study presented at #ACR24 convergence highlights significant gaps and inconsistencies in the research of systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (sJIA) and adult-onset Still’s disease (AOSD). Analyzing 195 studies with over 18,000 patients, they found considerable variation in clinical and outcome measures between pediatric and adult cohorts.
