You know you’re doing PR right when your name is more effective at getting journalists to look at your pitch than the subject line. Focus on developing a reputation for sending your core journalists great pitches and the rest will take care of itself.

This is important for #communications pros and our subject matter experts to remember. An interview is a conversation not a rote question asked, prepared answer given. Using talking points rather than scripted answers is more effective for a SME and makes for a better interview. Unfortunately that path isn’t taken as often as it should be.

One of the many things PR and Comms pros share on this site is what we can't control when working with reporters. Here's another one for the list: Headlines We don't have any impact what the reporters or their editors decide to run here. Or do we? Recently set up an interview with a source to talk about a pressing economic issue with a national outlet. The journalist pulled one of his quotes and used it in his headline. Good sources will deliver solid content in a press interview. Great sources will give the reporter irresistable points that make solid headlines because they pull people in and encourage them to read the story. Be a great source in your next interview. #pr #communications #leadership #publicrelations

Interesting findings from Cision's 2024 State of Media report. 74% of journalists surveyed want to receive news announcements/press releases from PR professionals. 61% want to receive original research. The #1 thing PR pros can do to help journalists is to understand their target audience and what they would find relevant (68%). The latest "State of Journalism" results are available from Muck Rack. They  surveyed 1,106 journalists from January 3 to February 9, 2024. Key findings that I have always stress w clients: -83% of journalists prefer to be pitched via email- (1:1--personalized!) -44% want to receive pitches before noon (even in a digital 24/7 news world, journalists have work hours and most stories are decided in the AM.) -65% prefer pitches that are under 200 words. (Keep your pitch tight and focused. Journalists are short on time and overworked). - Most PR pitches are ignored and the top reason is because the pitch is not relevant to the journalist. 49% say they respond to PR pitches. (Personaize your pitch!).  Interesting findings -70% of journalists say PR pros are either important or very important to the success of their jobs.  -44% predict they will spend more time on LinkedIn going forward. -More than half of journalists say social media is either important or very important to produce their stories. -69% of journalism work is made for digital publication. #Journalism #media #PR #data
