THE MEND collection a d budgeting 101 A little patchwork and a lot of panache. Budgeting for a new project? Here’s what to do. If you want to know how to set a budget and what it looks like when you are given material cost for carpet tile, learn from the experts. This was an exercise that I did with, Kurt Bowers, VP President/ Business Development at Elements of Space, to use with my clients and it has been so helpful to understand budgeting. Let’s take the cost of material as an example, say $25 per square yard. You’ll need to add freight at $1.50, adhesive at $0.65, installation at $4.00, prep costs, a 20% margin, and an 8.81% tax. This gives you an installation price of $42.64 per square yard. About 10 to 12 years ago, we used to add $10-$15 to the material cost to get a good budget installed cost. Now we need to account for inflation, and rising costs in raw materials. With the significant increase in costs today, it’s crucial to adjust your budget accordingly. Do you know what kind of FIXED WINDOWS your dealer is using? What are the tradeoffs in design, aesthetics, and size? Mulled, direct-set picture windows are often the cheapest and worst looking with so many joints and seams. Stepped Storefront windows look very commercial and collect dirt but can often provide the largest sizes. I have always been partial to Front Set Storefront from an aesthetic standpoint for luxury homes. The seamless clean lines are far more elegant. Most window dealers bid what's cheap and easy to install. Front set storefront was often field assembled and glazed where mulled picture windows were simple to just put in an opening. Why Interior Designers Should Care About Cash Flow Most interior designers I know say they don’t “love the numbers.” I guess that someone told them that they weren’t “good with numbers” when they were kids. Let’s fix that! If you’re one of those number-challenged designers, don’t feel bad. You’re better at numbers than you think. You just haven’t learned the language of business finance yet. If you source products and mark-up goods, track your time and pay your bills, you’re better at numbers than you think you are. Understanding and predicting your cash flow is one of the most important skills you can learn and it’s easier than you might think. Cash flow is simply knowing or predicting how much cash will be deposited into your account each month, and predicting how much cash will be paid for products, services and operating costs each month. The difference each month is either positive or negative, and that’s normal. 1. If you create a cash flow spreadsheet, you can see in advance when your pipeline will be slowing down so you can get busy marketing before the flow of cash slows to a trickle. If you don’t know how to create a cash flow projection, ask your bookkeeper for help. You’ll need to project time billing or fees and proposal payments for new projects. You’ll also need to predict payments for products and services related to the proposal payments. Your bookkeeper can average the amount of overhead it takes to operate each month and add that to the spreadsheet. At most, it should take 30 minutes per new project to assist your bookkeeper with the projections. 2. You will have more peace of mind and confidence about your business if you watch your cash flow on a weekly basis. 3.
