Seeking advice from job seekers, hiring managers, and career coaches about Applicant Tracking Systems. I’ve read and have been told that using an ATS friendly resume is the best approach when applying for a job online. However, I was recently told by a hiring manager at one of Connecticut’s largest companies that they do not use ATS systems. My concern is that submitting an ATS friendly resume to a company that doesn’t use one could hurt my chances due to the ultra simplicity (plain text, little style) of the resume. One third of the job postings on Indeed last month were part-time—and they weren’t in fast food either. Part-time marketing jobs jumped 10% and part-time jobs in media and communications rose to almost 9%. After acting in over 30 plays (community theater), I recently stepped into a new role, directing. This experience has been an eye-opener, revealing profound parallels between directing and leading customer experience (CX) projects. Directing, like CX leadership, centers around creating an experience that resonates with audiences and teams alike: ➡️ Focusing on how it feels for the audience: Just as a CX project aims to deliver a seamless and memorable experience for customers, directing is about ensuring the audience feels engaged and immersed in the story. ➡️ Supporting the actors (your employees): A director’s job is to create an environment where actors can perform at their best. Similarly, in CX, it’s crucial to consider how employees feel and what can be done to enable them to deliver exceptional service. ➡️ Navigating a limited budget and prioritizing: In both CX projects and theater, resources are finite. The challenge lies in setting priorities—identifying what to never compromise on and choosing which battles are worth fighting. On this journey, my inner perfectionist has made an appearance, a reminder that growth comes from balancing ambition with what truly matters.
