Feeling excited that Connecticut Data Collaborative's Data Strategic Planning is featured in Hartford Business Journal. I have always sarcastically suggested that my retirement plans are going to include authoring a book about why the traditional nonprofit funding model is broken. I have spent my entire career authoring grants. They are a valuable tool to access large, dedicated, sources of revenue. But... the act of writing a grant doesn't advance a mission. I have been leading Data Strategic Planning for only a year and half, and the work has advanced CTData's goals, increased capacity for other nonprofit organizations, and has provided critical funding for many of our really important projects that are difficult to support through traditional nonprofit revenue opportunities. What will it take for Pennsylvania to become an innovation leader? That was the question at the heart of the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development’s “Powering PA’s Future” Symposium, held at Lehigh University last Friday. Leaders from academia, industry, and government came together to explore how cutting-edge research, entrepreneurs, venture developers, and university tech transfer activity transform into real-world applications, creating opportunities and driving economic growth across the Commonwealth. The event highlighted the critical role universities play in the entrepreneurial ecosystem - not just in generating groundbreaking ideas, but in facilitating commercialization through technology transfer. By bridging the gap between researchers and industry, universities catalyze venture creation and societal impact. Lehigh’s new Accelerating Research Translation program, made possible by a $6 million award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Technology Innovation and Partnerships (TIP) Directorate, will work to accelerate tech transfer activity in coming years. Digital Inclusion Week kicks off today! Pennsylvania ranks among the lowest in the U.S. for digital literacy and connectivity according to the PA Department Of Labor & Industry. In response, the Greater Pittsburgh Digital Inclusion Alliance has united various organizations across Western Pennsylvania to tackle the digital divide. This collaborative effort, which includes United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania also includes the University of Pittsburgh as a key partner. I had the pleasure of moderating a terrific panel discussion at the Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering Alumni Career Night. Terry Neimeyer (pronounced knee-meyer) delivered a engaging keynote with 10 career insights: 1.  Continue learning 2.  Recognize not every work day wll be fun and challenging 3.  Set goals and put in writing 4.  Proper dress and showing up counts 5.  Be on time 6.  Be patient with career 7.  Not all bosses are equal.  Some will be good and some will be not so good. 8.  Improve writing and speaking in public skills 9.  Learn to work with weak and strong team members 10.  Have fun....work to live don't live to work. As the panelists shared the peaks and valleys of their careers, a common theme emerged: adaptability, resilience, and audacity. Career trajectories are non-linear. When facing difficulties, they navigate challenges by seeking support and guidance from their teams, friends, family, coaches, or faculty. Matthew Lesho , Shijit Dasgupta and Kathleen Rand. The energy from the students and alumni during the networking session was through the roof. I left at 22:00, well past my bedtime! Students asked about taking the first step in their careers, and a few minutes might not be enough to cover everything. I recommend these three books, Learning to Fly by Mike Rosenberg Edge by Laura Huang and Small Actions by Eric Sim among others. These books can help you take your training wheels off. Feel free to experiment with their insights, share your career/life designs with me, and let me know your thoughts on OneHop! A shoutout to the organizers! The University at Albany continues to lead the way in artificial intelligence and we are partnering with IBM to use the power of AI to advance research with real-world benefits. Five research projects have received funding through a $20 million collaboration between our Center for Emerging Artificial Intelligence Systems and IBM. The projects will study how AI can impact applications as diverse as extreme weather forecasting, advanced math, complex computer circuits, and language models for mental health settings. Each of the projects will leverage prototype AI hardware developed for IBM at the Albany NanoTech Complex and made available to UAlbany through a unique partnership. Read more below:

Pittsburgh Public School officials on Tuesday got their first look at several different scenarios that could drastically change the district’s footprint in coming years. The scenarios, presented by Massachusetts-based education consulting firm Education Resource Strategies during the district’s education committee meeting, are the next steps in Pittsburgh Public’s facilities utilization plan, a blueprint that could lead to the closure and consolidation of some school buildings as PPS faces declining enrollments and a growing budget deficit. Under the proposal, 16 existing schools would close, 14 would change their grade reconfiguration, six magnet schools would phase out and become neighborhood schools and five new programs would open in existing buildings

A new study from the New Jersey Statewide Data System (NJSDS) explores the educational pathways of New Jersey high school graduates from 2014 and 2015 who participated in dual-enrollment programs. Using NJSDS data, the study compares the experiences of dual-enrolled students with those who did not participate in these programs. The results indicate that students who are dual enrolled show a higher tendency to pursue higher education immediately after completing high school, especially at four-year colleges and universities, and are more likely to graduate within the expected time period. However, the benefits of dual enrollment are not equally accessible, with variations based on economic background, race, and special education status. The study highlights the importance of expanding dual-enrollment opportunities to address these disparities, offering key insights for educators and policymakers focused on promoting equity in educational outcomes. What could the world look like if we included the youth in the conversation more? What Eniola has envisioned and created is exactly why we should be creating opportunities for youth to engage, share and innovate. What we see here should not be seen as an isolated situation. Identifying youth with real focus and creating the right environment for them to thrive is critical for making the changes that will see the #futureofwork, #futureeconomies and our #futuresocieties develop in the right way. This week I attended the Dubai #FutureForum and reimaging the engagement of youth in #education, #foresight and #upskilling was a key part of the discussion. Stories like these are practical inspirations to help leaders see the possibilities out of the discussions. Bravo to those youth who are doing more, thinking more and not letting anyone hold their thoughts and ambitions back. A filter that eliminates airbourne viruses... imagine the impact around the world for #schools, #hospitals, #workplaces, etc!!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
