A new code update coming July 1, 2024 to California Fire Code is: 907.5.2.3.1 Public Use Areas and Common Use Areas Visible alarm notification appliances shall be provided in public use areas and common use areas including but not limited to: 1. Band rooms. 2. Classrooms. 3. Corridors. 4. Gymnasiums. 5. Lobbies. 6. Meeting <and conference> rooms. 7. Multipurpose rooms. 8. Music practice rooms. 9. Occupational shops. 10. Occupied rooms where ambient noise impairs hearing of the fire alarm. 11. Sanitary facilities including restrooms, bathrooms and shower rooms. 12. <Shared office rooms used by two or more persons.> 13. <Normally occupied room(s) used by two or more persons, such as mother's room, phone room, quiet room, wellness room, etc.> 14.<Normally occupied storage room/area.> 15.<Exam rooms in medical office buildings.> Exception: Where employee work areas have audible alarm coverage, the notification appliance circuits serving the employee work areas shall be initially designed with not less than 20-percent spare capacity to account for the potential of adding visible notification appliances in the future to accommodate hearing-impaired employee(s). These changes further clarify what common use and normally occupied rooms are and eliminates strobes and notification appliances in unnecessary locations.

VADA: This 200,000 ft. building has an Area 3 uplift value of -34.1. VADA specified a perimeter that passed 120 PSF, WITHOUT a vent in the assembly. A TRUE test, not a gimmick.... The Area 1 uplift value is -19.1 PSF. VADA specified a field that passed  135 PSF, WITH a vent, because VADA Area 1's are vented. VADA spec for this building is 3.5 X Safety for Area 3 And, 7 X Safety factor for Area 1. VADA's success is by Design. No wonder VADA has NEVER had a roof damaged by wind! How can you know how long something will take if you haven't mapped out the last leg of the trip? How can you know how long a project will take if you have not mapped out your commissioning, life safety, and closeout requirements? If we follow the advice from How Big Things Get Done, we will think from right to left--or think from the end to the beginning. That means we know what it means to finish a project and work back from there. First, we need to know what it means to finish the project. That usually includes: ☑ Finishing the building for beneficial occupancy. ☑ Finalizing & testing all fire alarm systems. ☑ Finalizing and testing all other life safety systems. ☑ Completing and inspecting all ADA requirements. ☑ Completing the State Elevator inspection. ☑ The Architect and Owner have created a punch list. ☑ All inspections are done and signed-off for the building. ☑ There is a preliminary balancing report for the HVAC system. ☑ The city has issued a TCO or COO. ☑ All engineering walks are finalized and issues corrected. When you work that back you will see the need for fire alarm, fire sprinkler, and HVAC systems to be fully commissioned. Additionally, you will see that you need time for elevator integration and testing, and have enough time for your Cx agents and controls contractor to provide a preliminary balancing report. This all takes time and must be mapped out at the end for you to know your path to finish. It is complex, but totally worth the journey.
