Reinvent the Lunch Break Conference Call for Working Parents: With your kids! Before you get instant anxiety or break out in hives, I know kids + zoom + parents is like a Covid hangover horror show of the very recent past that we still have scars from. But why can’t we reinvent the lunch meeting and make it a thing we do with our kids every Tuesday, because we all know Tuesday is easily the worst day of the week (long winded NYT OpEd coming soon on this topic). Parents of children who are under 10 know that by the time we pick them up they are, shall we say- not their best selves, and frankly neither are we, but lunchtime we could maybe get 10 full minutes to find out about their day and since they are hungry they will sit (essentially trapped) with you while eating (most likely complaining about the food you made/bought/in general). What if we normalized weekly lunch conference calls on zoom with our kids? We love them right, don’t see enough of their cute faces during the day. Can someone find a business case for this? I feel like there has to be one. The Mom Project, Moms First or some other parent forward group or a heartwarming Zoom marketing campaign has to have some pull to make this happen. It’s probably an objectively terrible idea with no logistical reasoning behind it… BUT… I would love to see their faces mid day when they are engaged and having a fun time at school and still have good energy. Rather than only ever seeing that tired cranky, whiny person aggressively asking for 72 snacks (BUT NOT THAT ONE MOMMY!!!!) after school. I would love to squeeze in a little more face time with those girls who are growing way too fast. #parents #parentinghacks #workingparents #businessideas #remotework

Reminder for all compensation pros going through their year end merit cycle: an often overlooked stat to check is velocity of promotions. If one gender, race or minority group is consistently promoted faster than others, it likely will create pay disparities. Why? Those promoted more quickly typically earn more, sooner. Velocity of promotions is also one argument for why many organization’s lower levels are predominantly one gender/race, while upper levels are another. Essentially, your velocity of promotions highlights glass ceilings, a signal of deeper inequality. Last week in #NYC - TALK talent hosted a networking and learning event with talent leaders who shared their pragmatic tactics to create an engaging and committed relationship between employers, candidates, and employees. Thanks to key insights from: Juliette Dupré (Chief People Officer) Jamie Krulewitz (Global Head of Talent Programs) Christopher Strazzella (Managing Director of Tech. SHRM's mission is... "to empower people and workplaces by advancing HR practices and by maximizing human potential. Our vision is to build a world of work that works for all." Human Resources plays a crucial role in shaping hiring practices, employee policies, compensation, benefits, etc. If the department responsible for these tasks does not actively promote equity, how can we truly build a world that works for all? I agree with Jamie's thoughts below—this decision seems more like a calculated, political move than one that advances HR practices. #shrm #DEI #Diversity #HumanResources

I appreciate the caution around "learning in the flow of work," but let's not confuse it with "teaching in the flow of work." Learning happens all the time, whether or not there's someone handing out PowerPoints. People do learn by doing, but not necessarily when they’re being taught. Training is vital, yet we often undervalue it because we don’t allocate enough time away from daily tasks for real learning. We need to step back and let people experiment and absorb new skills. Balancing immediate performance support with dedicated learning time is essential for meaningful development.
