Excited to share that we’ve raised a $1.2M pre-seed round for building Coplay – an AI copilot for game developers! 🚀 When Marcus, Joned and I started brainstorming business ideas for world models, we quickly realized there’s a bigger problem to solve. Over the last 4 years we’ve built over 30 games. As a game dev you spend half of your time inside a game engine. The problem with game engines is that they have deeply nested point-and-click interfaces, making tasks tedious and repetitive. Product is fun, complex, messy, and there are no shortcuts. Once you accept that—and embrace it—amazing things happen to your career. Cat Hicks, PhD puts this better than anyone: "Doing research with developer teams, something that really strikes me is how much people look for ways to make complex problems easy rather than make it easy to work on complex problems What I mean is, sometimes it's really useful to admit we just are trying to accomplish tough things. Asking how we can support our teams who NEED the time and space to work through that, it's often a much more tractable lever than trying to change the inherent nature of the work I think it behooves me to say as a psychologist here that I think people are actually really excellent at working on complex problems! It's one of the reasons research with developers is so great. Overall devs love to learn, love to be curious, love to innovate. It is core stuff. What would it look like if we could ask, "how do I make this the absolute best environment for complex problem-solving" instead of "how do I take away all these annoying hard problems." The stuff we want to accomplish in the world is hard. But can be joyful to accomplish."

California Law SB 1120 has gone into effect, and prohibits health insurance providers from denying claims solely based on an algorithmic decision. This means that "yes" decisions can be automated, but "no" decisions must be routed to a human expert reviewer for a final decision. Fun thought experiment: what would actually break down (and when) if each team at your company used two simple tools: 1) A single google doc, and 2) a basic flat tasking system like GitHub issues. I've been running this fun thought experiment with teams and the surprising answer is "Very little" in most cases. It is amazing how much extra stuff we add that isn't really essential.

I finished listening to the BG2 podcast with the Microsoft CEO last night. Extremely interesting conversation with Brad Gerstner and Bill Gurley, and a lot to chew on. I found myself skipping back repeatedly to listen to certain parts again, to make sure I understood exactly what Satya was saying. One example was the quote above, in the context of the long-term implications of AI for the workforce, specifically at Microsoft in this case. I'd be very interested in hearing what everyone thinks of this. PSA: Stop using the original OpenAI CLIP weights. I see a lot of people using CLIP for multi-modal retrieval. What many people may not know is that there are 100’s of CLIP models now since OpenAI’s original release. These newer models offer significantly better performance across many benchmarks. For product search related tasks we recommend the following. + Fastest inference: ViT-B-32 [laion2b_s34b_b79k] + Best balanced: ViT-L-14 [laion2b_s32b_b82k] + Best-all round: xlm-roberta-large-ViT-H-14 [frozen_laion5b_s13b_b90k] You might notice these are not the ones that perform the best on the benchmarks. Why? Because the benchmark only test for very specific tasks which are often quite different from search and recommendations. These are ones we have found to be the best for product related search and retrieval tasks and generally very good first choices if you are unsure where to start (even for non-product related search).
