Over the years I’ve seen dozens of variations of the strategy/tactics “layer cake”. Somewhere at the top (or bottom) you have vision. And then three to six layers away you have projects, bets, experiments, options, or whatever. The vision is super stable, lasting years and years. The strategy sticks around for one, two, or three years. And at last we have the “work”—where the magic happens—lasting weeks and months. Everything cascades, nests, and connects neatly. It feels good; It looks good. Except… We operate in environments that don’t operate in terms of neat cascades. A shift in the macro-economic or socio-political environment can upend every layer. If you imagine a strategy consisting of many assumptions and motions, it is unrealistic to expect a homogenous level of stability. Some parts are about winning/losing in days and weeks. While other parts are much more stable. No one has any skin in the game for all the fluffy words in the cake. Nothing holds them to these words. No one will keep a 2y goal “stable” just because teams want it that way. One quarterly misstep and the whole thing will be rewritten—implicitly or explicitly. The budget is where the actual decisions are made. And no one looks back at the nice diagrams and says "alas, that's a three year commitment!" All to say that outside of the nice slide-ware, it is much more effective to imagine many diverse motions in play—each with unique shapes and needs—instead of a cascade.

Could AR/VR Revolutionize AI Workflows? The spotlight shifted from AR/VR to generative AI over the past few years, but I think we're about to come full circle. Working with generative AI is both fascinating and complex, often requiring the juggling of numerous tools and processes. I find myself increasingly convinced that emerging technologies like augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) will take orchestrating these workflows to a new level. Working with AI often feels like juggling flaming torches while balancing on a tightrope. For example, I might need to: - Retrieve a record from a spreadsheet - Merge data from record into a prompt template - Send newly merged prompt to AI and capture response - Continue with N number of addition steps in prompt chain - Write final response back to spreadsheet column - Repeat this entire process for each row of the spreadsheet Handling these tasks all at once is overwhelming, underscoring the complexity of AI workflows and the mental strain they impose. And that's why tools like Google's Notebook LM and OpenAI's Canvas are so valuable and welcome. Despite these advancements, we are still constrained, and I often feel like I need 10 arms to juggle everything. Now imagine integrating AR/VR technologies into our daily interactions with AI. Picture the iconic scenes from Minority Report, where data floats mid-air, easily manipulated with simple gestures. Such an interface could fundamentally enhance our ability to manage, visualize, and interact with complex AI processes, making them far more accessible and intuitive. Envision an AR/VR environment with: - Interactive 3D AI Components: AI models and data appear as tangible objects you can move and connect with natural gestures. - Dynamic Data Visualization: Abstract processes become concrete visuals, making complex data flows easier to understand. - Seamless Navigation: Voice commands and intuitive controls allow you to traverse through layers of information effortlessly and route the data you need through a 3D representation of your context resources and processing endpoints. In this immersive setting, the daunting task of managing multifaceted AI processes could become intuitive and even enjoyable. Hear me out: software is cool and all but nothing beats shipping products. Sure, software is the investor’s darling. I get why: it scales fast and promises big returns. But as powerful as software can be, it still lives in the hardware we make (Nvidia anybody?!). Yesterday, walking along our SMT production line, I got struck by the beauty of that PCBA: every trace, every component, meticulously placed. This is what innovation looks like to me. There’s an artistry in hardware that no line of code can replicate. And yet, hardware often struggles to attract investors. Why? The die-hard perception that “Hardware is hard”. But here’s the thing: hardware can be de-risked early and effectively. In fact, I’d argue it’s one of the most tangible and predictable investments you can make. With the right resources, team and processes, achieving a 100% shipping certainty with sub 1% defect yield is not just possible, it is repeatable. Ok, Roblox released a long-awaited feature, Avatar Auto Setup, as a beta, and it seems very promising. This tool offers a streamlined approach to rigging, segmenting, and skinning 3D models with minimal effort. Leveraging AI to drastically reduce the time spent on avatar creation is undoubtedly appealing to creators looking to optimize their workflow. However, while exploring the Avatar Auto Setup feature, I encountered a few issues that may hinder its effectiveness, especially for more complex models that GIANTY normally produces. Firstly, the requirement for models to be in an A-pose with a single mesh and optimized Tris count could pose limitations, particularly for those working with intricate designs or existing models with multiple meshes. Additionally, the challenge of ensuring UV and texture compliance, especially when dealing with separate textures, could result in a lack of textures in the final output, as observed in my tests. Furthermore, the auto setup process faced difficulties in certain areas such as hips, shoulders, neck, and facial rigging, leading to instability in emotional expressions and potentially compromising the overall quality of the avatar animation. Lastly, the issue of clothing compatibility post-auto setup is worth noting, particularly if the character already wears clothing during the rigging process. This may require additional manual adjustments to ensure seamless integration. Overall, while Avatar Auto Setup shows promise in expediting the avatar creation process, especially for simpler models, addressing these issues will be crucial to fully realizing its potential and ensuring its effectiveness across a wider range of scenarios and models.
