Black Tech Saturdays has brought an energy and momentum to the City of Detroit’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, thanks to the efforts of Alexa Turnage and Johnnie Turnage. In just a year, this weekly event at Newlab has grown from a dozen participants to over 1,000+ weekly. Entrepreneurs show up to find talent, to find new opportunities, to connect with each other.  Why is this so important? The answer is simple math: 🧩Our Detroit population is comprised of over 80% black and brown people 🧩Less than 1% of venture capital goes to startups owned by black and brown entrepreneurs  🧩Tech jobs are like the automotive factory jobs our grandparents came to Detroit to fill over the past century that lifted them up and into the middle class 🧩Detroit’s resurgence has fueled increases in real estate values and added over $3Billion in wealth to the black community over the past decade TechTown Detroit, NPower, Venture For America and a host of other organizations are all collaborating and contributing to Detroit’s continued resurgence. https://lnkd.in/gZWazp7M

The Challenges and Resilience of African-American Men in Education The journey of African-American men through the educational system has been fraught with challenges that stem from historical injustices, systemic racism, and socio-economic disparities. From the legacy of slavery, which denied Black individuals access to education, to the contemporary realities of the school-to-prison pipeline, the educational experiences of Black men have often been characterized by marginalization and disconnection. In many classrooms, African-American males find themselves sitting at the back, a position that can symbolize their feelings of alienation. Research indicates that these dynamics are not coincidental; they result from long-standing biases in educational policies. For instance, studies show that Black boys are disproportionately placed in lower-track courses and face harsher disciplinary actions, leading to disengagement and diminished self-esteem. This phenomenon is exacerbated by stereotype threat, where the fear of confirming negative racial stereotypes undermines academic performance and participation. As we move into the 21st century, African-American men confront a landscape marked by stark educational and economic disparities. Initiatives like “Brothers on the Rise” offer mentorship and support, empowering young Black males to navigate their educational journeys effectively. Yet, significant barriers remain. Historically, Black males have been underrepresented in advanced placement courses, and the lack of access to quality educational resources continues to hinder their academic progress. The question arises: how do we get here? To answer this, we must consider the broader socio-economic factors influencing African-American males. High poverty rates, inadequate educational support, and the negative portrayal of Black men in media contribute to a cycle of underachievement. However, the resilience of African-American males cannot be overlooked. Many are rising above systemic barriers, utilizing mentorship and community engagement to forge paths toward success. Moreover, the conversation around intelligence must shift from narrow definitions that prioritize IQ to a more comprehensive understanding that encompasses diverse talents and skills. Scholars like Howard Gardner advocate for recognizing multiple intelligences, which can help validate the unique strengths of African-American males in educational settings. As educators, policymakers, and community leaders, we must engage in meaningful dialogues that address systemic inequities and promote inclusive educational practices. The experiences of African-American men highlight the need for culturally responsive pedagogy that affirms their identities and fosters engagement. Only through collective action and systemic reform can we pave the way for a more equitable educational landscape—one where all students, regardless of race, can thrive. The journey is far from over!!!

This week, as we head back to the Super Bowl of Black Policy—CBCF Week in DC—I’m reminded by this Season 1 clip of how complex it is to be an entrepreneur, a social impact strategist and Black. In unique ways, traditional business models and frameworks weren’t created with our success in mind. As a strategist, my mind is always trying to figure out the following: 1. How can we design parallel catalytic movements to ensure that on the other side of pitch competitions and accelerators, mass wealth is a possibility for the majority, not just the unicorns? 2. And speaking of unicorns, is that mindset really helping or exacerbating the current business conditions which historically have excluded marginalized communities? 3. And because innovation is often a response to both curiousity and need, how can we better shine the many ways our communities problem solve—even if they don’t look shiny or polished? Black men, as we move forward, we must redefine the way we connect with each other by focusing on building authentic relationships rooted in trust, respect, and shared purpose. The non-electric sewing machines are up and running in Namutumba, Uganda! Thank you Brenda Gates-Monasch for the support and advancing this project! To grow, Warmilu is committed to supporting groups like EZRA-UGANDA ASSISTANCE who are creatively and innovatively teaching their local women-led teams how to sew on fully non-electric sewing machines. It seems fitting considering that we are producing rechargeable non-electric infant warming incubator blankets. Our hope is that, in 2026, we will be growing our fulfillment bandwidth with the support of in-country production. This allows Warmilu to start fulfilling orders with infant warming incubator blankets produced locally. Job creation and training is huge for many of these women - learning how to sew is allowing many of them to earn new income for their families!
