Shelter costs are still running at 5% increase per year and contribute more than 1% to the overall CPI. The Federal Reserve is hoping for inflation to fall below 2% before dropping rates. Until last month, when energy costs plummeted and brought month over month CPI increase to 0%, inflation had been increasing at an annualized rate of 3% to 4%. There are no Fed meetings in August or October. Even though many experts believe there is a 75% chance for a rate cut in September, we believe it may come after the election.

We're up 206.3% in our highest growth portfolio since 12/30/22. The average email to clients from most financial advisors is something like: “Markets may shift due to economic factors and geopolitical uncertainty..." The 2024 election results may impact financial markets, tax policies, retirement planning, and regulations....... etc, etc, etc.” No specifics. No insight. No excitement. Meanwhile, our emails sound more like this: “Your Equity Innovation portfolio is up 98.4% in 2023. Up another 54.5% this year.” Simple. Direct. Results that return. And here’s a number your advisor probably isn’t showing you ---> 𝟮𝟬𝟲.𝟯% If your advisor emails feel like weather forecasts, maybe it’s time for an upgrade. We don’t talk about performance. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Equitable Holdings" The last time I checked Equitable was an IBD owned by an insurance company. Labor Market Soft Landing Progressing, but Not Complete ◾ Payrolls & Unemployment Up in Parallel. This labor market continues to follow the soft landing blueprint by the book so far. Nonfarm payroll employment increased 272k in May vs. 180k consensus (plus -15k revisions to prior months). Although the unemployment rate ticked modestly higher to 4%, it remains well near historical lows while the labor market comes into greater balance (job openings counts converging with job seekers). ◾ Wage Growth Not Yet Slowing. It’s clear now that calls for disinflating wage growth were too early. Average hourly earnings growth ticked up to 0.4% on a month-over-month basis, which is the largest increase since January. This will be a closely watched development since wages are a key cost input for services, which remain the stickiest part of the CPI basket holding the Fed back from cutting rates. ◾ Making Sense of the Disparity. Why the disparity between payrolls and unemployment? For one, they are outputs of two different surveys. The household survey that drives unemployment includes farm workers, some that are self-employed and other private household workers. Those are not included in the establishment survey for nonfarm payrolls, which also has a statistical error rate that is 4x times higher than the household survey, hence some of the large revisions often seen after the fact. Altogether, the unemployment rate is probably the more reliable indicator to follow. ◾ Fed Reaction Function. On net, today’s jobs report was hotter than expected with payrolls and wages above expectations but offset on the margin by a higher unemployment rate. This probably doesn’t change the Fed’s decision process that likely sees rates on hold again at next week’s FOMC, but it is roughly consistent with a path toward rate cuts beginning in the fall.

Zoom in on "repeatable #alpha" and it often looks less impressive up close. An analogy: Roger Federer gave a hell of a commencement address at Dartmouth College several months ago in which he walked through his career #statistics. In sum, he won - 82% of matches, but only - 76% of sets yet only - 58% of games and, shockingly, only - 54% of points. The idea that long term outperformance often is driven by a surprisingly modest positive win-loss ratio is not new. Traders with 55% win rates are heroes. Poker players with 55% win rates are banned from casinos. #quantitative #finance relies on small average wins. Even #fundamental investors get it. A journalist once asked #valueinvesting legend Howard Marks why all his funds were in the top quartile, and he reportedly replied "because we never leave the second quartile." #Replication of pre-fee #hedgefund returns is built on this same principal. Why target date funds (TDFs) aren’t the best retirement solution: (and what I recommend instead) ❌ They’re a one-size-fits-all solution TDFs use averages and demographic data to build their glide paths. This means they create a generic plan based on the average participant, not your specific needs. ❌ They allow limited customization There’s a trend toward customized TDFs, built around specific plan demographics. It’s a step forward, but still not fully personalized. ❌ There’s no room for comprehensive planning TDFs don’t tell you if you’re on track, how much you’ll be able to spend, or the impact of saving more or retiring later. How can families prepare for potentially higher taxes in the future? With a massive outstanding federal #debt burden, an aging population weighing on federal deficits, and the 2024 #election just around the corner, many families are wondering how the possibility of higher #tax rates could impact their financial plans. Without congressional action, personal tax rates are already scheduled to increase when the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) “sunsets” at the end of 2025, and various estate tax policy provisions will expire as well. President Biden’s budget proposal for fiscal year 2025 also included details around higher income, capital gains, and dividends taxes. It’s still too early to tell what policy changes will actually come to fruition. But in our latest Modern Retirement Monthly report, we suggest seven strategies to help manage future tax liabilities, regardless of the outcome of the political climate: 1: In your working years – use the “savings waterfall” to enhance flexibility 2: Use the “spending waterfall” to manage taxes in retirement 3: Defer capital gains (when it makes sense) 4: Increase after-tax growth with “asset location” 5: Revisit your estate plan and consider accelerating lifetime gifting 6: Give to others, with growth 7: Give stocks to charity Read more in our full report below
