🔥 Substance Designer Quick-Tip: If you were looking for a way to make a procedural tilling wall, where you mix two different Patterns this is how you can do it: 🥇 Create 2 Tile Generators with a scale of 1, and a Random Value in Interstice x. Set the node to Max Mode and the Luminance Random to 0.5. Be sure each of them has different values in their X/Y. 🥈 Use a Blend node in Copy mode to mix these two patterns. Use a shape node connected to a Transform node which is set to "Not Tilling", and place the middle circle in the Lower edge of the image frame. Here's an example of leveraging a custom trimsheet on a simple platform design, making it feel more complex than it really is. As an Environment Artist learning how to create and utilize trimsheets is crucial to leveling up your workflow. There are multiple wins such as performance, high fidelity and continuity. 🚀 Sci-Fi Detailing: Trim Sheets & Decals 🛸 Continuing with my sci-fi environment series, here’s a look at how I added intricate details to my Unreal Engine scene! 💡 After refining the mesh, I created a trim sheet model in Maya, finalizing the details before baking them into normal maps, ID, and occlusion. With the UVs set, I then used decals to bring extra detail to life, even repurposing the trim sheet textures for the decals. I’m passionate about building immersive, sci-fi worlds and am always inspired by the incredible work of studios like Frontier Developments Foundry 42 Ltd and Wargaming . 🔥 This is how I created a Hammered Metal Material using Substance Designer! 🥇 I created the base Noise for the surface, using a BnW Spots 2 and a Warp. 🥈 I hammered my metal with an inverted cell pattern. 🥉 I used my curvature to start my base color and add masks for variation. 🎖️ I rendered my material in marmoset toolbag 4 using Ray Tracing. 💡 Pbr might be nice and all, but at the end, the result you will be publishing will be the one you render. I really like Substance Sampler and use it frequently. However, it seems that recent updates have made it extremely unstable and crash prone. As it stands I can't even create a material, close the app and open that material without it crashing. #adobe #substancesampler #sampler #substance

Another great resource for level design and #gameart is Dimensions.com. It’s a database with common measurements and construction terminology used for everyday objects, buildings, trees, etc. A goldmine of information!

Adam Duff LucidPixul makes a Souls Game analogy on working on your craft as an artist in this video cast, and it is great because it is true! Life is like souls games you gota keep at it and at some point, you get that reward in life. Great analogy! Also, if you have not sub go subscribed to Adam Duff, all artists need to hear what he says in his casts. Same with casts like Bobby Chiu you need these expert artists in your life who bring positivity in frustrating times. The last few posts I talked about reaching some goals or going for some goals in life while also having challenges prior. That is part of life and something I have zero regret doing. I talked on crunch and some to a great majority was self-imposed because if you know me personally, I am a workaholic. It has only been recently (3-4years) where I am allowing myself to enjoy more life and take time on more personal things. But, without that grind I know I would not be where I am. I have always been the type of artist who does art even after work and studies at a constant, and I still do this. :) This comes mainly because I always feel that the industry as at a constant shift from technology to art trends, but I also enjoy learning all this, so it is not a problem. Beyond of course the constant work it takes. It is not easy it never was for newer artists or even experienced artists. I hear like Adam many newer artists that it is "harder" now and while to some degree that is true. The fact remains it was never easy to enter and stay in this industry for extended period of time. The devotion it takes is truly extreme. Sometimes I put it akin to a calling this is as my calling in a non-religious way of saying it of course. I cannot imagine myself doing anything else in life. That is perhaps the biggest reason some newer artists who have that fire but cannot get into the industry hurt so much. If I could express to artists is that many of these hardships that seem impossible to accomplish are not. A mountain of goals is only a mountain of goals in your mind if that is how you view it. Instead of mountains think of them as smaller hills that once you reach to top of those it gives you more experience to reach the next higher hill and so on. This post is getting a bit long for sure, but we do live in a world of instant satisfaction and nothing in life that is worth it, is instant. From the concept of trying your best to be the best person you can be to meeting and marrying your partner and staying in a long relationship it is not easy, and you must work at it day and day out. I am lucky to have found a person on this life who appreciates what I do daily, because we are both artists Sharlene Lin my soul mate. We have both gone through a life event prior that make many life issues trivial. 🔥 Have you tried making a Photoscan Material and got some unwanted lighting in your Base Color? 🎇 This is the tool you need in Substance Designer, Luminance Highpass node. It Cancels out lighting information by performing a highpass on the input's Luminance value. Useful for fixing photographed textures with lighting information. I recall, years ago, working at an indie studio and being told that we had to come in on a Saturday on a long weekend because the client would be there and we needed to look busy. Our project was on track, and overtime wasn't necessary to meet our target, but our producer was adamant that even if we had nothing to do, we had to sit there and look busy to set a good example. Not long after that, we worked over 24 hours, with team members (including me) sleeping under their desks for an hour or two to stay functional. Sadly, things like that were commonplace back then. Around that time, a developer's spouse became somewhat famous for calling out the unhealthy practices of her husband's employer, and many might argue that she was the spark that incited a need for change. All this to set the tone... I had a manager here at Treyarch that said the most gratifying thing a manager ever told me when I stopped by his office to ask if I could take an hour to step out for an optometrist appointment. I'm paraphrasing, but he replied, "We hired you for your expertise and the results you bring to the position. You don't need to tell me things like this because I trust you will deliver on your tasks and goals." That simple statement changed everything for me. It lifted an enormous weight off my shoulders and allowed me to be more results-driven than being concerned that I make every single minute of the day about productivity or looking "busy". We've come a long way since those times, and there's still work to be done, but I encourage you to lead with trust and to empower your team to be results-driven instead of a butt in a chair. I can also proudly say that Treyarch has continued to be a shining example of promoting a healthy work-life balance and making the workplace safe and encouraging. Even though I'm about to shamelessly plug joining the Treyarch team, I was not asked to write this post and do so because I truly believe it's a great place to work. 🚀 Battle for Troy (Work in Progress) part 1🏛️ I’m sharing a preview of my latest project, inspired by the legendary Battle for Troy. This ongoing work explores historical storytelling through advanced 3D modeling, texturing, and rendering techniques. 🔧 Technical Overview: Maya: Precision in 3D modeling to craft intricate details. Substance Painter: Applied lifelike textures that bring realism to every asset. Unity HDRP: Leveraged high-definition rendering for decent visuals, water systems, Len Flares and Post Processing. Bit late talking about this one but huge news coming from 343 Industries, both a re-brand to Halo Studios and confirmation that they are switching development to Unreal. 🗞️ This comes off the back of 343's struggles with development of Halo: Infinite. We've seen many other studios move away from their own engines to Unreal, notably CD Projekt Red!
