Buy FSD For $8,000 or Stick To The $99/Month Subscription? Tesla recently lowered both the monthly and outright purchase price of FSD from $199 to $99 per month and from $12,000 to $8,000 for the outright purchase price. This brings up an important question - should you buy FSD outright, or should you stick to the monthly subscription for your Tesla vehicle? We've got everything you need to know and think about. First off, it's important to note that the monthly purchase price was lowered by 50% and the outright purchase price was lowered by 33%. When you look at the numbers, the monthly price is more attractive - in the shorter term because it was given more of a discount. However, there's more to think about, including: * How much the monthly/outright price will increase * If Tesla does a per mile pricing model in the future * How soon Tesla will reach level 3 to level 5 autonomy * How much FSD will increase the value of your Tesla vehicle * How long your Tesla vehicle will last * Whether you want to run your Tesla as a robotaxi or not These 6 criteria will determine which option you should choose for your Tesla vehicle. I know I've been plugging a lot of Auto Scaling and Fleet launches lately (I didn't even get a chance to talk about more responsive target tracking, but it's also a fantastic enhancement: https://lnkd.in/gSNUC4Fd), but I have one more big announcement. It was a great honor to help lead the engineering team in innovating with Capacity Blocks for ML just over a year ago. Our senior leadership has listened to customer feedback on this offering over the past year and pushed us once again to further our goals around democratizing access to GPUs. And, once again, our team delivered. We are announcing 3 changes are massive wins for our customers: 1. Support for Capacity Blocks up to 6 months in duration 2. Support for extending Capacity Block purchases 3. Sad to hear about the *last* carvel meeting. Carvel came up with (1) a sane replacement for k8s operators (2) a really dynamic Yaml substitution model (3) a really easy to use docker image inspector (imgpkg). I love these tools (especially 3 and 1) and still use them sometimes, even after i left VMWare Tanzu. Reminds us that - if you depend on an open source project - as the contributors to donate it to a foundation - esp if its relevant to infrastructure or other critical things that might be mission critical. The CNCF or the ASF have always been great homes for projects - and they live well beyond the scope of any company's ups and downs. Open source foundations are super important, and they're experiencing a loss in contributors due to the economic crunch. I used to hate pair programming. Now that I work remotely 100% of the time, I absolutely love it. I can't really get other people to do it much, but I take any opportunity I get. I used to go into the office every day. There were so many distractions. People were talking to me all the time. I just wanted to escape to a quiet corner and hide, to get some work done. Pairing just felt like more noise and more pressure. Working from home though, it's always quiet. It's lonely quiet. Pair programming feels like water in the desert. Lighting fast communication through speaking, instead of the slow peck of a chat client. Getting answers immediately, sharing screens. Compared to screenshots and email and slack, it feels like I'm plugged directly into someone else's brain. Like we have ESP. Yet I'm sure that if I were to return to an open office layout, I would quickly start to crave the quiet again. Do I just want what I don't have? Or is a hybrid schedule the ideal? Some of the time alone and then some time together.

I have a strong opinion about this. I have been a senior engineer for most of my career and am always looking for feedback to achieve a promotion to principal engineer. I agree that impact is more important than output, but it's hard without being a principal engineer. If you are not a principal engineer, you won't have access to meetings and knowledge to distinguish what is impactful and what is not. Until then, you need to have a mentor, a manager, or someone with a bigger picture who is able and willing to guide you in discerning what is impactful and what is not. If this doesn't happen, your only option is to increase your output, hoping that one of those things will have a considerable impact by chance.

SWE Industry: Never manipulate strings in Prod if it can be avoided, and if seen in a PR by a staff/principal engineer would immediately be rejected Job Market: Manipulate these strings in weird ways on this assessment so you can get this job... Wild, if you are interviewing software engineers, give them real world problems to solve, not some arbitrary random string manipulation that we would never do in production. You're likely missing out on a lot of talented people.

I once asked a lead engineer on Angular: Which is better: Angular or React? His response: "Both require good engineering to be effective." So, my developer friends, consider this a reminder that "frameworks" like Diátaxis are fine, but they still require good engineering--such as UX, information architecture, style, maintenance processes, and so on--to create great documentation experiences for your customers. Alas, the framework alone isn't enough.

There’s a trend I’ve been noticing recently. In many conversations I’ve had with developers and generalists across the industry, more and more people are investing time (and money) into learning Unreal Engine—either as a side skill or making a full pivot. The reasons? From what I’m hearing, it comes down to higher demand for Unreal Engine expertise. In my experience, this shift is becoming quite clear on the technical and developer side of things.
