What are the most significant obstacles to using electronic health records (EHRs)? Klas Research asked 33,000 clinicians across over 300 healthcare organizations this question and compiled their answers in the 'EHR Interoperability 2024' report. When asked specifically about their experiences with patient data from external organizations, 47% mentioned the lack of proper integrations to access EHRs. This new EHR will feature Oracle's clinical AI agent, voice-activated navigation, and Health Data Intelligence, which integrates patient data from over 300 sources to enhance clinical workflows and improve patient outcomes. The platform aims to replace traditional EHRs, which often dictate rigid workflows, with a more dynamic system that allows for personalized care plans. Oracle Health emphasizes that the new EHR is a complete reinvention rather than an upgrade of the previous Cerner system. Additionally, Oracle plans to become a Qualified Health Information Network to facilitate standardized data sharing across the healthcare ecosystem. Executives at Oracle also unveiled new cloud applications to improve patient management and streamline front-office operations, reinforcing the company's commitment to enhancing healthcare accessibility and data utility while addressing interoperability challenges in the industry.

Another reason why the healthcare industry is one of the main targets for the bad guys. Ascension, a major U.S. healthcare provider, reported a "cybersecurity event" after detecting unusual activity in its network, which has disrupted clinical operations. They have enlisted Mandiant, a team of incident response specialists, to investigate and have also informed relevant authorities. Early indications suggest that ransomware may be involved, with disruptions including disabled virtual desktop and VPN connections, forcing some staff to revert to manual operations. Ascension has stated it will notify and assist individuals if it finds that sensitive information was compromised, in line with regulatory and legal standards. Our Vice President of Business Development Greg Miller was recently quoted in a Healthcare IT News article on the reaction to the Department of Health and Human Services final rule that levies financial penalties on provider organizations found to have committed information blocking. “Data is the single most important ingredient in our ability as a nation to transform healthcare,” Greg said. “The access and dissemination of quality data is essential to improving patient outcomes. Value based care (VBC) 1.0 language was heavily oriented to language like "disruption". This language was like a punch in the mouth and was effective at building awareness of new opportunity - but disruptive punches to the jaw don't sound like a very attractive end state. It sounds pretty painful, and maybe that is one reason why VBC adoption has stagnated. VBC 2.0 needs to be about integration and partnership so that we can start to bring real value to patients and the provider organizations who serve them - and do that at scale. The pre-eminent leader in health plan clinical guidelines coming together with the most innovative AI provider of utilization management technology is a perfect example of this new paradigm. Kudos to the MCG Health and Cohere Health teams taking a leadership role to make the health care system work better for all.
