Innovators are primed to transform healthcare with AI technology. However, applying tech to the right problems is critical, so every field should prioritize areas where AI might be beneficial. Behavioral healthcare should focus on two crucial deficiencies—access to care and Measurement-Based Care (MBC)—where low-hanging fruit waits. Brief visits with therapists in the primary care setting will be vital to improving care access. Patients value these visits because the setting is non-stigmatized, the contact is limited, and a non-judgmental, empathic listener is hard to find.  Yet, outcomes will benefit from extending the work virtually. AI-driven tools could direct patients to targeted local and digital resources. MBC needs help getting patients to complete brief clinical measures. Clinicians and their staff absorb the burden of this administrative process today.  AI products currently exist to engage and query consumers on many topics, and similar tools could automate MBC interactions. AI could direct the process from data collection and analysis to clinician alerts on high-risk patients. AI could leverage MBC’s ratings of clinical risk in other ways, such as prioritizing behavioral interventions.  Indeed, AI’s targets are coming into better focus—healthcare’s many inefficient systems. There is a misconception emerging that AI agents will lead to immediate reductions in healthcare labor costs. While AI agents can automate end-to-end workflows such as booking appointments, answering basic patient questions, and performing form completion for prior authorizations, automating a single task is not equivalent to automating an entire job. Nurses are a prime example. Certain nursing tasks, such as care coordination and patient documentation, are highly automatable by AI agents; however, there is a tremendous amount of work nurses perform on the ground that cannot be fully automated with current technologies such as direct patient care, physical examinations, medication administration, wound care, patient support, and clinical assessments. These nuances make full role elimination less likely with current technologies. When articulating the ROI of an AI agent, we need to be both precise and accurate. Automating a task is more often not automating an entire profession. For roles that encompass many functions, such as nursing, AI agents can be invaluable tools for unburdening staff, increasing efficiency, and boosting throughput—benefits that are particularly valuable given current healthcare staffing and resource shortages. The most promising job candidates for full role elimination through AI remain positions with monolithic task structures, of which there are relatively few in healthcare today—scribes, medical coders, and data entry specialists for example. It is therefore unsurprising then that the most progress has been made in these categories.

Let's talk about hospital quality measures. They sound intimidating but are crucial for the health industry. It's how we compare hospitals and track improvements. Think of it like reviewing a restaurant: you use Yelp to see ratings and decide which to choose. But health is more serious. We need specific numbers, data, and facts: - How often do their patients get infections? - How quickly are they seen? - What's the readmission rate? - What are their mortality rates? Some people say these measures aren't perfect and don't reflect variables such as patient populations or only focus on specific metrics and not unmeasured aspects of quality care. But right now, it's all we have to compare hospitals and make informed decisions. So let's focus on delivering patient-centered care and improving patient safety rates across every healthcare system.
