It's high time we encouraged women to join the tech sector before the country faces a serious talent shortage. How can we make this happen? By supporting educational initiatives, launching internship programs, and encouraging female employees to mentor young girls. This strategy not only enriches the industry with fresh talent but also allows us to train personnel specifically for our needs. (Post 1/2) Yesterday, I attended a G-CMO #Next meetup which covered the #VentureCapital POV regarding the position of #Marketing, mainly the #CMO. We were hosted by SysAid (Thank you Dorit Oren Israeli) and the first session was held by Michal 🦄 Sever and Daniel Cohen. The event shed light on the intricate dynamics between marketing leaders and venture capitalists (#VCs), highlighting essential strategies for CMOs to elevate their roles and impact within their organizations. 1. The VC Landscape: Roles and Expectations Michal Sever and Daniel Cohen emphasized the multifaceted responsibilities of VCs: a. Raising Capital: A significant portion of their time is devoted to securing funding. b. Supporting Portfolio Companies: VCs actively support the growth and development of their investments. c. Engaging with Startups: Constantly meeting new startups to identify the most promising opportunities. The unique perspective VCs bring from these interactions often reveals a critical gap: CEOs frequently pitch alongside their VP of Finance or CRO, but rarely include their CMOs. This omission underscores a common misunderstanding about the pivotal role of marketing in storytelling and strategic communication. 2. The Storytelling Deficit #CEOs understand the necessity of compelling #storytelling but often lack the skills to execute it effectively. CMOs are crucial in unifying the company's narrative across all stakeholders, yet they are frequently absent from high-level discussions. To earn a seat at the "big boys' table," CMOs must get access to company data to craft a cohesive and compelling story that resonates with investors (CEOs usually keep this information away from marketing). 3. The American-Israeli Dichotomy The speakers pointed out a cultural contrast: while Israelis excel in innovation, they often struggle with storytelling—a strength commonly found in their American counterparts. This gap in narrative proficiency can hinder the effectiveness of Israeli startups in the global market. 4. Marketing's Crucial Role in Investor Relations A key takeaway from the meeting was the "rule of thumb" for investor communications: All investor-facing materials (PPTs, documents, etc.) should go through marketing. These materials must not only be accurate but also visually impressive and compelling. 5. CMOs who have demonstrated extraordinary creativity—such as SodaStream’s Super Bowl ad, and (I prefer not to mention)'s unconventional marketing on adult sites—stand out to VCs. Innovative, out-of-the-box marketing strategies are what capture investor interest and confidence. 6. The Perils of Outsourcing Marketing Outsourcing marketing can lead to a disconnect within the organization, causing frustration and inefficiency. The trend of taking marketing out of house is seen as a major mistake to VCs, emphasizing the need for integrated, in-house marketing teams to maintain alignment and coherence in messaging.
