USC Ideas Empowered Program - Advisory Board Mentor Many barriers can prevent academic ideas from turning into real products, companies, and organizational change. Most notably, there is a well- seed-stage investing that makes it difficult for university innovators to complete technical viability and proof-of-concept work. The Ideas Empowered Program bridges the gap between ideas and the marketplace by supporting both the idea and the innovator through mentoring and coaching, connections to resources, and grants of typically $50K for validation of technical feasibility through proof-of-concept experiments and prototype development. GOALS OF THE PROGRAM The Ideas Empowered Program seeks to support groundbreaking projects emerging from USC research that, with some mentoring, other programmatic support and a small amount of funding, impact. The Ideas Empowered grants help identify the most exciting and game-changing ideas at USC, reduce the development and investment risks around these promising early discoveries, and bring together the elements necessary to translate the discoveries to the market. Successful projects could spin out in a number of ways: attracting investment to establish a high-growth start-up company, licensing to a corporation that invests resources to turn the intellectual property into a new product or service, or scaling a new model for organizational change.

HART is a non-governmental organization that collaborates with indigenous leaders and other humanitarian aid organizations worldwide to save lives and alleviate suffering through the highly focused surgical missions to developing countries. This is accomplished through the diligent work of various volunteers completing focused surgical missions in various disadvantaged countries. Our History The Humanitarian Aid Relief Team began when a group of American college students spent a summer in Russia teaching English. The students were greatly affected by the lack of medical supplies and training in the areas they visited. Upon their return to the U.S., the students collected medical supplies and recruited volunteers. In 1994, HART volunteers began to look for other relief projects that could benefit from a relationship with HART. HART was notified of Buruli Ulcer, a little-known disease afflicting rural areas in Africa and South America. With the help of the World Bank, HART made arrangements to begin working with the Centre for the Development of People and the University of Science and Technology, both based in Kumasi, Ghana, Africa. HART worked with the Centre for the Development of People and the University of Science and Technology to coordinate its efforts in Ghana for the treatment and eradication of Buruli Ulcer. HART defined a three-fold mission. First, HART would provide needed medical supplies to the St. Martin's Hospital. Second, HART doctors would provide treatment to the patients at hospitals in Ghana. And third, HART teams would provide training for local doctors to improve the techniques used to treat Buruli Ulcer patients. Since the 1995 trip, HART teams have traveled to Ghana yearly, bringing much needed medical supplies and training. More than $2 million in donated supplies have been delivered and hundreds of patients have been treated.
