The state of AI in early 2024: Gen AI adoption spikes and starts to generate value. Recent insights from McKinsey & Company highlight a surge in generative AI adoption across various industries, revealing transformative effects on business operations and strategy. Key Takeaways: - Widespread Adoption: From startups to multinationals, organizations are leveraging AI to innovate and enhance workflows, particularly in sales and marketing. - ROI Generation: Strategic investment in AI is not just about cost savings; it's increasingly about driving revenue growth. - Personal to Professional: The integration of personal AI usage into professional settings is creating new opportunities for efficiency and creativity. My take is that with the latest announcements from Apple, this will accelerate - Challenges Remain: Despite the progress, concerns around data accuracy and legal complexities persist, though they are diminishing as technology advances. This is not surprising as innovation is hard. Hallucinations & inaccuracies in my opinion will disappear more and more as people get used to GenAI, Prompting and models get better - Strategic Approaches: Companies are opting for configurable off-the-shelf AI solutions rather than building from scratch. I'm very convinced that's the best strategy to apply All in all, it shows it is still the early days for adoption but companies are finding success much faster than before. Simple Ai: “Importance of Ai Tools by Department.” Ai helped me conjur and simplify org readiness self assessments/needs by unit. 30 minutes to build and deploy on desktop/mobile. Example below is not the assessment of any company. UX is “tap” to select importance of Ai tool by unit. Add/Delete/Edit fields and Export included. “Prompt-to-Full Stack” is a thing. Next up: Figuring out how to build a ready-to-deploy ATSC 3.0 broadcast app (BA) with Prompt-to-Full Stack Ai and in accordance with ATSC standards, Run3 Framework and security protocols. The easy button is coming.

The cost of training top models is increasing 2-3X per year, and at this rate will reach $1 billion per model by 2027. The findings are from Epoch AI and follow their recent analysis of increases in compute for foundation models running at 4-5X per year. They've also provided some interesting data on the relative breakdown of cost components like staff, hardware, and energy. A few thoughts after reading this: - I would assume staff costs won't increase as much as hardware and energy costs, so the relative contribution of human labor to future AI models will decrease, in yet another sign of capital's increasing dominance over labor in the industry (just look at NVIDIA's ever-rising stock price). - If compute is increasing 4-5X per year but cost is increasing 2-3X, is it safe to assume that training runs are getting more efficient? - Some people, like Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, have said we'll see $1 billion training runs in the next year. Does this mean the 2-3X pace is about to increase? That Epoch is wrong in its estimate? Or that Amodei is overstating the cost, possibly to put fear into competitors who can't keep pace? - Only a few companies are going to be able to train future models. We're likely going to see further consolidation. Perhaps we get to a future with only two large general purpose models, like the Windows/MacOS and Android/iOS duopolies we've seen in the past. Despite concerns about its impact on creativity and brand voice, 78% of CMOs are optimistic about GenAI.
