Thanks to John Johnston for the POLITICO Europe London Influence story on the training gap between white PR Professionals and those from BME backgrounds. The Chartered Institute of Public Relations State of the Profession survey showed that white practitioners are: - more likely to have received training in the previous 12 months (81% vs. 74%) - are more likely to have agreed training needs with managers - and are less likely to have had requests for training turned down (36% vs. 47%).   This represents statistically significant gap in the training experiences and opportunities of UK BME PR professionals compared to their white colleagues. Not only is training vital for an individual’s progression, and internal profile, as it can shape how an employer views their ability and seniority, lack of access can impact overall achievements as well as retention - a key point brought up by Matthew Otubu. And based on previous research and people's lived experience, it’s also a red flag for other missed work opportunities and unspoken barriers to fairness and inclusion. Sadly the training gap is not surprising but it is unacceptable and, in an age of skills shortages, inexcusable. #PR #Comms #DiversityandInclusion #Training https://lnkd.in/eCZypZM8

Should digital marketers be less Baby Reindeer? That was one of the funny moments in a really insightful panel discussion about data, privacy and how to navigate a cookie-less world and signal loss. The esteemed panel was hosted by News Corp Australia's Pippa Leary and featured LiveRamp Daniella Harkins, Omnicom Media Group's Kristiaan Kroon, Journey Beyond's Wade Stokes and AdFixus's Roland Irwin. As Kroon pointed out, the media planning and buying game has changed considerably with so much complexity in data, tech and privacy. Marketers who are using data to reach audiences need to have talk to their legal and IT teams or risk falling foul of constantly evolving privacy laws. This was an interesting debate, check it out below.

I've written something for PRmoment about Bluesky, PRs, and journalists - potential folly, but hopefully actually, good and useful. It's about why if done well (and supply and demand being key), Bluesky could become as much fun as Twitter was back when all this was fields *wafts hands around*, and how this is important for PR types and making journo friends. Will the next government bring increased regulation for the UK advertising industry? The UK general election falls on the last day of MAD//FEST LONDON, so by the time Grace Carter gets on stage to start the party in E1, many of the votes for the political parties will have already been cast. One change that the new government could oversee is increased external regulation and governance of the advertising industry - would that be a good thing or a bad thing for you? Let's take AI for example. Katherine Viner, editor of the Guardian, recently called for AI regulation. She said, "Without quality journalism to train and ground large language models, these technologies would struggle to make sense of the world around them." Without quality, trusted data to train the AI models on, it is easy to see how we could get into a vicious circle of AI choking on its own exhaust fumes: 1 - Incorrect content published 2 - AI reads that incorrect content 3 - AI therefore writes incorrect content Crap in, crap out, as they say in the trade! ;-) I would also add that digital advertising relies on quality content that consumers spend time with, so that the advertising has a chance of having an impact. For example: The difference in dwell time on an MFA site, which uses GenAI to create the content and click-bait to get somebody there, to a page with 10 ads, is a world away from the experience of a subscriber to a premium publisher site, who logs on to consume the content they pay for and only sees a single ad next to that valued content. 💬 - What do you think - more government regulation or not? #ai #regulation #advertising

It’s almost Friday, and for those of us in the world of PR that means it’s almost time to prepare our weekly updates/reports for clients. There’s nothing worse than getting to the end of the week with not a lot of coverage (or none.. it happens to the best of us!) and panicking that the client might think we’ve done nothing this week. Quick question: are you doing a thorough enough search for coverage? There are so many different ways to search. Some platforms display articles that others don’t and vice versa and, hopefully, this will help you look like the PR superstars that we know you are when it comes to reporting! 💻 We start with Google. But get creative. Don’t just search for your client’s name, search for keywords from your article, your spokesperson’s name, and even product names. If you find an article, paste that headline into Google and see if it’s been syndicated. Google Images can also throw up syndicated articles. And don’t forget to click “repeat the search with the omitted results included” if it pops up at the bottom of the page. 💻 Use other search engines. Bing is my go-to, but you’ve got Yahoo!, DuckDuckGo and many others. I am forever finding new articles on Bing that Google hasn’t picked up. 💻 Pay for media monitoring. We use Meltwater for online, print and broadcast monitoring, but there are many others (we used to use Onclusive).   💻 Find freebie news trackers. I personally LOVE Talkwalker, I find it picks up far more than Google Alerts does. 💻 Pop your url into Ahrefs. At 10 Yetis Digital, we always put urls into content being outreached, whether it’s to the client’s homepage, a product/category page or even a dedicated blog or widget hosted on their site. Ahrefs will show you all the pages on the internet linking back to that particular url. 💻 Search social media like you would a search engine. Really. You’ll be surprised what it throws back. 💻 It also helps to know which sites syndicate so you can check them too. For example, when an article runs on The Sun Online, it’s quite often syndicated onto The Irish Sun, The Scottish Sun and The US Sun. Back in the early noughties these types of ‘formula’ were a handy tool for PR folk looking to secure coverage for all sorts of brands. Remember the formula for calculating the ‘beer goggles effect’?! Out of curiosity, for a bit of fun, I asked ChatGPT to come up with a mathematical model that quantifies the impact of thought leadership and visibility on investment appeal. I won’t share the whole thing, but this is the headline formula it came up with. II = B + (wV×V + wC×C + wP×P) + ϵ Here’s how it works: 🔎 Visibility (V): Increasing the public presence of the CEO or founders—through media appearances, conference engagements, and social media—raises the company’s profile among potential investors. 🤝 Credibility (C): Demonstrating a solid track record, supported by peer-reviewed publications, industry awards, establishes the company’s reliability and expertise. 🧑‍🔬 Perception of Leadership (P): These efforts culminate in a stronger perception of the leadership team, which is crucial for gaining investor trust. (Mathematician connections - feel free to challenge this! 😄) But there’s a much easier way of demonstrating my point: Visibility = Investment. LOOKING GOOD! As we crack on with the Winter (Dec/Jan) issue of the magazine, I was talking to a colleague today about how many of our advertisers seem to struggle to produce adverts that are legible, or the right tone visually. For an advertiser, getting readers’ attention is vital, so using text that’s too small to read, colours that are too dark, or too much copy to fit into the allocated space can really have a negative impact on their success. If you get this wrong, readers will just pass you by because what they are seeing is just too hard to read, or not appealing. So if you’re thinking about producing an advert for a magazine, consider the following before you put mouse to mat. – What is the format of the magazine, is it A5 or A4, as this will determine the size of the text you use? Will it be legible on the page? – Colours – you want your ad to stand out on the page, so using eye-catching colours is essential. If your brand colours are dark, mitigate this with elements that don’t focus too heavily on brand colours, and use white background. – Keep your message, strong, powerful…and brief! Too much copy is overwhelming, off-putting, and no-one has the time to read it. All these things are even more important for smaller ads, as larger spaces give you a bit more to play with. This is intriguing. In the past couple of decades The Guardian has built itself from a UK newspaper into a global media brand, winning Pulitzer prizes along the way. The flipside is that The Observer, the world’s oldest Sunday newspaper, has at times looked unloved. The print edition has lost pages and supplements over the years and it doesn’t even have its own standalone website. Enter Tortoise Media. It’s a new-media success story, having persuaded people to pay for long-reads and deep-dive podcasts. Picking up The Observer would be a big gamble, not least given the fixed costs of printing a paper, assuming it doesn’t plan to immediately switch to online only. There’s a long tradition of investors spotting a chance to carve out an asset from a larger group and reap the benefits. Private equity firms have made an art of it. So there’s a big opportunity for Tortoise. Is ad-noyance killing great reporting? On the face of it, Brits want to have their news cake and eat it. At least that’s what it first seems from a survey in Press Gazette. The vast majority want to read ad-funded online content. Yet just 1-in-20 of the ads they’re served are relevant to them. This is the real turn-off. I don’t care for “the best sandals for older women to wear all day comfortably.” Nor am I interested in a “New oedema device that leaves experts speechless.” This kind of two-bob clickbait nonsense clutters up news pages. It destroys page load times. And renders articles unreadable. Of course, journalism has to pay the rent. But not at the cost of haemorrhaging readers.
