Arm just completed it's closing statement. As mentioned in my summary yesterday, there are 3 (really 2 ) questions for the jury to answer: 1. Did Nuvia breach the #ALA)? 2. Did Qualcomm breach Nuvia ALA? 3. Are Qualcomm products with (Nuvia technology) covered under Qualcomm ALA? Arm reiterated their same arguments and addressed some of the issues Qualcomm had raised - Nuvia/Qualcomm needed Arm consent for acquisition - Breached confidentialality requirements of ALA by sharing it with QC - Bought Nuvia because of cost savings, not performance - Arm Technology includes Architecture Compliant Core (Remember my comments in the #blogs about it) - Many things Qualcomm mentioned are irrelevant (e.g. SoftBank ownership, CEO salaries etc .) Doing more with less is what I have gotten into these days. I have seen BOM and demands coming to me/my team in TBs of storage and GBs of Memory and nearly half a dozen cores of 1-2Ghz. Today I am developing software for systems with less than 4MB of storage, 320KB of memory and two cores giving me 80Mz. Embedded systems and IOT were part of a magical world for me until few months ago. Simple things like back light of an LCD screen on a panel going off after few seconds, clock ticking away on the microwave, the beep when I turn on/off the fan or aircon, all were expected behaviour. Now that I am doing it myself, I am having the Chuck Nolan moment of having made his fire at that island. Coming from a time when 16Mz PC-AT using 640kb of memory and 1.44 even 360kb floppy disks was luxury, I see my current hardware is way superior to in early 90s. I used to juggle memory then through overlay files and TSRs, creating linked lists as and when I see need to store/purge data. INT21H was my thing for event driven coding. HiMem the one beyond 640kb I used it as RAMDisk which is like blazing fast drive. Brings back memories. The world of embedded systems hardware and the ecosystem has matured to a point where I am seeing otherwise heavy HTTPS, gRPC and Node.js implementation seen possible in such tiny bit of hardware. Host to Host API calls, is just few lines of code away. The capability of a platform like Espressif which gives BLE, WiFi with station and AP mode to coexist, it's ability to interface a ton of peripherals it's amazing. These have been around for years, I at times feel - where was I? Who knows, or one day AI systems which rely on blazing fast GPU hardware may even find its way into these tiny nano scale hardware. Had an incredible time at the Qualcomm Product Security Summit 2024! Big thanks to Alex Gantman for organizing such an impressive lineup of speakers. As someone involved in product security, I found the presentations on Vulnerability Management by Nabanita Sen and Mukul Senapati from Qualcomm, and Security Patch Validation at Google by Lauren Stan and Day Truong, particularly insightful. Our team has been spending substantial efforts in these areas, and the insights gained will certainly help us in our ongoing projects. A standout moment for me was the workshop on code signing led by Daniel M. from Nvidia. Over the years, I've faced the challenges of code signing across different platforms and have been seriously considering developing a lightweight open-source code signing server. Larger enterprises typically address their code signing needs with internal tools or expensive external solutions, but for small to medium enterprises, it remains a significant challenge so that is some place for a disruption. This server could potentially support hardware HSMs(like YubiHSM) and sign a variety of software, including firmware files, PE32, deb, ipk, pip modules, as well as Android and iPhone apps. There's a definite need for a simple, open solution in this area, and this workshop definitely sparked some ideas!

My Perspective on Intel’s Recent Challenges and Potential Acquisition by Qualcomm It’s becoming increasingly evident that Intel is facing challenges in maintaining its position in the highly competitive AI/ML market, and this could eventually lead to potential acquisition talks, with companies like Qualcomm being suggested as possible contenders. Key Observations: The most pressing issue is Intel’s seeming unpreparedness in responding to NVIDIA’s dominance in AI/ML advancements. While NVIDIA’s A100 and H100 product lines are receiving widespread attention and engagement, we hear far less about Intel’s Gaudi2 and Gaudi3 offerings. This disparity in visibility is concerning for Intel, as staying competitive in the AI/ML space is crucial for long-term viability. For instance, I’ve personally been contacted multiple times by NVIDIA’s customer engagement team regarding their proactive efforts to build long-term technical collaborations around CUDA-accelerated 5G/6G Open RAN and Digital Twin use cases. NVIDIA’s forward-thinking strategies are not only promising but are backed by actual product execution on the ground. Intel, on the other hand, needs to take similar bold steps by aligning its strategic vision with actionable product rollouts to stay relevant in this rapidly evolving field. My Harrowing Experience with Amazon: A Tale of Negligence and Harassment As a loyal Amazon Prime member, I’ve always trusted the platform for its convenience and customer service. However, my recent experience has shaken that trust and exposed shocking lapses in Amazon's processes. The Issue: On 25th Oct 2024, I purchased a Redmi Note 13 Pro (Order ID: 407-7341526-8150700). There is MRP mismatch. I initiated a return request, which was approved. The item was picked up on 2nd November 2024 by an Amazon delivery agent. I was assured that my refund would be processed shortly. To my shock, after n follow-ups, Amazon claimed that I returned the wrong item and refused to process the refund. Despite our evidence, including call recordings and CCTV footage of the return pickup, they refused to share details of their internal investigation. Escalation and Recovery: On 3rd November 2024, the same Amazon pickup agent revisited my home to question my family about the refund, a deeply intrusive and unprofessional act. Unable to get a resolution from Amazon, I filed a police complaint at the KPHB Police Station. The police investigation revealed that the delivery agent had exchanged my new phone for an old one and retained the new phone. The police recovered the phone, confirming my claims. Amazon's Response: Despite the police findings and the agent’s admission, Amazon continues to deny my refund and hasn’t acknowledged their delivery agent’s misconduct. Their communication has been dismissive, citing irrelevant order IDs and refusing to provide meaningful updates or compensation for the harassment caused. Customer Protection: How can a company as large as Amazon fail to safeguard basic consumer rights? Transparency: Why was no evidence from their internal investigation shared with me? Accountability: Even after proof of fraud by their agent, Amazon hasn’t acknowledged their negligence. While the delivery agent has offered to compensate me out of his pocket, the onus lies on Amazon to refund the amount and compensate for the harassment caused. I am sharing this here to raise awareness and urge Amazon to take such issues seriously. As customers, we deserve better! Has anyone else faced such issues with Amazon? I periodically read the Yugabyte blog, and just stumbled across this gem by Karthik Ranganathan. >Organizations can start for free with open source software without speaking to sales or hitting a demo request or contact us form. This makes exponential adoption growth a real possibility. I would agree—walking back freely-available software to be no longer free is not a good business plan. At the time, Broadcom market cap was less than 10% of Qualcomm's market cap. 10%! Most people were surprised bye the question, but didn't answer. Some said that Qualcomm needs the competition. Today, this thinking seems completely obsolete. Especially considering the fact that Broadcom tried to acquire Qualcomm, and was blocked by #Trump right as was about to move it's HQ to the U.S. American firms account for 71% of the industry’s global market cap without manufacturing the chips in the U.S. Most chips are made in #Taiwan (TSMC) TSMC is the world’s leading #semiconductor contract manufacturer. TSMC became a trillion-dollar company in 2024. Broadcom ended 2024 with a bang after releasing a stellar earnings report. #AI-related revenues could reach $90B by 2027 ($12B today). I think Visual Capitalist forgot Cadence with market cap of $83B. Renesas Electronics (Japan) missed the list just below onsemi at $24B

At MWC Shanghai last week, I had the pleasure of speaking with Qualcomm's CFO and COO, Akash Palkhiwala.  Qualcomm is on a roll, dominating the premium smartphone market with its Snapdragon chips and making significant strides in the PC space. Our conversation highlighted Qualcomm's strategic diversification. Akash emphasised how their expertise in multiple technologies (cellular, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, cameras, displays, AI) is being leveraged to transform industries beyond smartphones. During the interview we spoke about: 🔘 AI-Powered PCs: Qualcomm's entry into the PC market is gaining momentum, driven by their "AI-first" approach.
