This is a super interesting blog from Sundeep Bajikar, VP and head of corp. strategy for Applied Materials. "Scotty we need more power!" For those of use old enough to remember Star Trek TOS (and if you don't know what that is I'll wait for you to visit the wikipedias...) this phrase is burned indelibly into our brains. Invariably some nefarious force was holding the Enterprise against its will, or the ship was trying to outrun a baddie, or an incoming energy bolt threatened the integrity of the hull, and always the solution was "more power". The world we live in today is quite different. Not to say that the need for compute power has reduced, in fact quite the opposite given the enormous computational requirements of modern AI and HPC workloads. But that "power" must now be weighed against the power (energy) required to use it. In AI it's no longer about TOPS, it's about TOPS/W. And a laptop that dramatically outperformed its competitors but had only a 30 minute battery life would be considered fairly useless. So when the power (energy) requirements of datacenters start to be measured as a percentage of global energy consumption it's easy to see why managing and reducing power (energy) is a critical part of modern designs. Enter the Movellus Aeonic Power product family. By integrating the power supply for components of an SoC the power (energy) can be made more localized, smarter, more efficient, and the overall demand for energy can be reduced significantly. So rather than running all of your compute cores or AI acceleration clusters full tilt when only a few are needed, you can now modulate power at the core or block or cluster level to reduce the energy to precisely what is needed and no more, and this fine grained power control can yield immediate benefits. Advanced power savings like this were once attainable only by the largest and most advanced teams on the planet, but the field has been leveled. Well, after 13 amazing years, Nov 22nd was my last official day at Arm. What a fantastic journey of diverse challenges, rewards and people. However, the time finally came to try something new. Before talking about what comes next, I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy a few months leave in between. Reflecting on this time, I’ve been able to: - Get my open water diving qualification with my daughter - See the rowing at the Paris Olympics (inc. family heroes like Imogen Grant, Helen Glover and Tom George!) Awe-inspiring environment and living testaments to dedication and working hard - Vacationed in Egypt (what can I say, I’m a history geek) - Installed the daughter in university (biochem, 11 sessions of rowing training a week and busy social life = happy daughter) - Built three sheds on our mooring on the Cam (no such thing as too many sheds 😊) - Built a boat dock (building in water – that was new!) - Rewired/remodeled parts of our canal boat - Ran >200kms per mo. for three months straight - Ran three half marathons - Did a lot of rowing - ... and a lot of junior rower coaching (inc. watching the son compete/develop) - Read five books (inc. the Bronte sisters – incredible authors!) - Indulged a curiosity in quantum physics, inc. exploring its potential link with consciousness – an idea discovered when leading AI marketing - Spent time with friends (inc. building two business plans) - Learned how to ski (WIP!) - Lots of family time - Dreamt and added more things to my bucket list than I completed ☹ Looking back… it’s a real reminder of how valuable time is. As enjoyable as it has been, I have to admit to missing work some. Colleagues, customers, challenges and rewards.  And so I’m pleased to announce that I’ve started a new role in product leadership at Imagination Technologies (IMG). Having considered IMG a competitor for many years, they were not my first thought for a new role. But various things led to a few conversions with them and through this, I was impressed by the practicality, honestly and clarity of the new leadership team as well as the innovation and agility they were reflecting in the org. As part of this, I began to see less of an overlap with my previous roles as distinct market positions and trajectories. Something you will hear more about from me soon (great times ahead!) With that, I’m excited about what lays ahead and the opportunity to have an impact on it. In prepping for the new role, I’ve been reflecting on how to be the best leader possible, pulling on a bit of exceptional leadership examples, a lot of ‘other’ examples and my own successes and failures. More on this will be coming in the near future. In the meantime, that’s it for now. Exciting times ahead. If my new direction overlaps with yours, please get in touch. Otherwise… time to dive in!
