PJM has released the results of their 2025/2026 Base Residual Auction. These results set each utility's capacity cost for the 2025/2026 capacity year. "The auction produced a price of $269.92/MW-day for much of the PJM footprint, compared to $28.92/MW-day for the 2024/2025 auction." For a typical customer with a 50% load profile, the new capacity costs will increase your electric rate by more than $0.015/kWh, in most utilities. This increase will be treated as a "change in law", and will be passed on to the ultimate consumer. Even though you cannot avoid this increase, there are strategies available to lesser the blow. Swell Energy, a virtual power plant (VPP) provider that partnered with various utilities, is reportedly shutting down shortly after acquiring solar and storage installer Renu Energy, according to Latitude Media. Exciting transmission news in the Midwest! MISO advanced its second portfolio of Long Range Transmission Planning projects, which would create a 765-kV backbone across the region. The grid operator expects the lines to produce net benefits of $23.1 billion over 20 years and $83.2 billion over 40 years across the Midwest ⚡ Next steps: -MISO committees to review this fall -Board vote expected in mid-December If approved, the projects will come online from 2032 to 2034.
