How does India deliver “Care” to rural communities through Digital Health? The mission of an ideal Digital Health Solution should be to deliver hospital-grade care, anytime and anywhere across India & the globe. The Solution should enable multiple health screens & deliver high-quality care regardless of whether the rural community has a local Doctor or a trained Nurse or whether they have power or WiFi, etc. While challenges like power & WiFi can be addressed through technology, how does one deliver health screens & diagnostics without the presence of a local Doctor or Nurse? Enter the ASHA Worker. THE most critical “Non-Technology” component of our Digital Health Solution. It is the Asha worker who ensures that all tasks related to creating a patient profile, capturing patient symptoms, and measuring patient vitals, are completed efficiently despite the unavailability of qualified medical professionals. The Asha workers also visit patient’s homes to provide door-to-door care – especially for older patients with mobility issues and for expectant mothers who may not be able to visit a clinic. And finally, there’s an emotional element to delivering good quality “patient care” that cannot be fulfilled by ANY technology, and which is warmly delivered by the Asha worker. The Asha workers also need to be provided with a digital health solution that has advanced telemedicine capabilities but is extremely easy to use. That was the design mantra for the RHEMOS Health Station. India’s smallest & easy-to-use rural care solution. It enables Asha workers to administer 60+ critical vitals, blood/urine & pre-natal tests in village PHCs. The Health Station can also be carried to a patient’s home to deliver high-quality care ensuring huge patient convenience. India's Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) is a digital health initiative aimed at transforming healthcare delivery. Launched in 2020, ABHA assigns a unique 14-digit health ID to every Indian citizen, serving as a centralized repository for their health records. This digital health passport promises seamless access to healthcare services, reduces administrative burden, and empowers patients to take control of their health. As of 2023, over 50 crore Indians have registered for ABHA, and the number continues to grow rapidly. By connecting patients with healthcare providers across the country, ABHA has facilitated telehealth consultations, improved disease management, and reduced out-of-pocket healthcare expenses. While challenges such as data privacy and digital literacy persist, ABHA represents a significant step towards a more equitable and accessible healthcare system in India. Specifically, they have raised objections to RailTel Corporation of India's proposal for online pharmacies to distribute medicine. AIOCD highlights that e-pharmacies are allegedly operating unlawfully. In the post-COVID era, there is a growing expectation for all consumer and patient products to be conveniently delivered to their doorsteps. Despite AIOCD's objections, the presence and expansion of e-pharmacies in India raise questions about their continued operation. One significant issue raised by AIOCD is the legality of medicine delivery by e-pharmacies. This prompts a crucial consideration: How can margins be set appropriately to incentivize consumers to choose to purchase from traditional chemists over online platforms, especially concerning pricing concerns? The juxtaposition of legalities, consumer convenience, and pricing strategies in the pharmaceutical landscape underscores the evolving dynamics within the industry. This trend is driven by several factors, including the increasing reliance on advanced diagnostic technologies, the widespread adoption of imported medical equipment, the rising costs of pharmaceuticals, and the high fees charged by private healthcare providers. For the average Indian patient, even a single hospitalization or chronic disease management plan can lead to financial strain, especially for those without health insurance. This is particularly troubling in a country where out-of-pocket expenses account for nearly 65% of healthcare spending, pushing millions into poverty every year. For middle-class families, medical emergencies often necessitate borrowing money, liquidating assets, or depleting savings, leaving little financial security for future needs. For the lower-income population, the lack of affordable healthcare options leads many to forego necessary treatments altogether, exacerbating health inequities and worsening outcomes. Even the government’s flagship schemes like Ayushman Bharat, while beneficial, have limitations in coverage and implementation, leaving gaps in accessibility for rural and marginalized communities. Moreover, rising costs have indirectly fueled a growing distrust in the medical system, as patients often struggle to understand why treatments are expensive, with some attributing it to profit motives rather than necessity. Additionally, the over-prescription of tests, high consultation fees, and hospitalization for conditions that could be managed as outpatients further exacerbate the financial burden. The situation is particularly dire for patients with chronic illnesses like diabetes, hypertension, or cancer, where the need for regular treatment and medication becomes a lifelong financial commitment. The healthcare inflation rate outpaces general inflation, making healthcare less affordable over time, even as incomes fail to rise proportionally. Savitribai Phule, India's first female teacher, broke barriers in 1848 by starting the first school for girls. Today, her spirit lives on as we continue breaking barriers in women's healthcare. The connection between education and health is profound: - When women are educated about their bodies, they make informed health decisions - Knowledge breaks the chains of shame and stigma around women's health - Educated mothers raise healthier families and build stronger communities - Awareness leads to early detection and better health outcomes In my practice, I witness daily how health education transforms lives.
