🧱 Databricks VS ❄️ Snowflake GTM strategies My friend Jason Saltzman from Live Data Technologies shared some great insights into the hiring patterns of two AI giants—Databricks and Snowflake. Here’s the TL;DR: Databricks has ~2x more eng talent compared to Snowflake. Snowflake has ~2x more sales reps compared to Databricks. This highlights two very distinct GTM strategies: 1) Snowflake prioritizes rapid sales team expansion to dominate market share. Their strategy is built around scaling their sales force in response to regional demand signals—a “feet on the ground” philosophy common in competitive markets. This approach allows them to capture opportunities with speed and precision, particularly in high-demand areas. 2) Databricks has focused on community-driven strategy and delivering exceptional product value. Their free, forever-accessible Community Edition lowers barriers to entry, making it easy for users to experience their platform. A self-service trial model lets anyone start using Databricks with just a credit card—no sales rep required. They capitalize on community endorsements to influence key decision-makers, like CIOs, which dramatically shortens their sales cycle. They believe that product quality can handle much of the selling, which is why they hire significantly more AI/ML talent compared to their competitors. Same industry. Totally different GTM strategies. What’s the takeaway? Your team should reflect your strategy. If you're building a GTM team make sure the profiles you are looking at have had success in similar GTM motions. Your sales leader should have experience with a similar approach—they’ll bring the insights and instincts needed to succeed without a long ramp time. And another thing these two companies excel at? Hiring customer-facing talent with strong technical acumen. I've said this a billion times but: you need to hire GTM talent that has relevant technical acumen. You can't sell what you can't teach. I am still processing all the information from this AM's Snowflake platform keynote. The two big takeaways for me were: 1️⃣ They are absolutely working to deliver the vision of what an end to end data cloud platform should be. Wholistic, Open, Interoperable. I love this. 2️⃣ They are focused on making everything very simple. So much so "Anyone can create a chat bot" was proven on stage. That second point is the one I'm still processing. It's a BIG POINT. Off the cuff, the implications (in my humble opinion) are that its no longer about what you can do, but how are you going to do it in a manner that is A) operationally governed, B) scalable, and C) valuable to your business. Those ABCs are what we at Cervello have always focused on for our clients. Why? Because that is the difference between a project that just checks a box, and a program that delivers real transformative value to a business. As a Snowflake Alum, I was initially nervous with Snowflake's seemingly late entry into the Generative AI race. But my initial doubts have turned into enthusiasm lately as Snowflake's strategy appears to be taking shape. From its very beginning, everything Snowflake has introduced has been geared toward efficiency and ease of use, and it's clearly no different with their efforts in the Generative AI space. Last week, Max Cameron told me I look too much like a sales person when I wear a blazer and t-shirt. Gearing up for Snowflake's Data Cloud Summit this morning, I donned the blazer again, even though I know it'll scare people away since they often don't want to talk to sales folks. Why? If people are still willing to talk to me even though I look like a scary sales person, I can be more confident that ATLAS is solving a real problem and that we've nailed our messaging. (This is the same thinking underlying Jessica Livingston's advice for early startups to focus on sales, not marketing.) If the conversations fall flat, I can drop the blazer, which makes discovery-style conversations easier since folks won't be too scared to chat. Finding PMF is about operating in these two different modes at conferences and everywhere else.
