I must confess I dont understand CEO compensation Mr Tavares earned zillions over the years, like €36mn in 2023 alone. And that, I am told is because HE adds value. He is very good and he created billions, and so him pocketing a small share of these billions is legit. He is skilled the story goes and that's what his amazing skills are worth. Very good. So, in 2024 sales go down dramatically, he will not make much money then (no bonus) and so he walks out. Alright. So, is he skilled or not? Was it skills all these years or just a lot of luck with a bit of skills? And given the big losses in 2024 and in the years to come, he owes money to the company, right? Since it turns out that less value has been created, and maybe value will be lost... This is really a big problem this Exec compensation as is, no? And if someone is skilled and should earn a lot because of that, then very good, this person can buy call options, at the market price and with his own money. If he makes money on that, I wont complain.

China’s strategic bottom-up approach on batteries and consequently on electric cars has been ignored far too long by the EU and the rest of the world. Tariffs can help somewhat, but won’t fundamentally turn the tide.

The US-Mexico supply chain continues to expand. Stellantis, which manufactures Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles, is scaling up in Mexico. US companies are increasingly caught between Scylla (the risks of Chinese manufacturing) and Carybdis (the costs of unionized labor in the US). For many, the solution is increasingly going to be in Mexico. Stellantis already manufactures 27% of its vehicles in Mexico. This move should enable them to strengthen that source. Amazing news ! Successful leaders need strong and challenging executive coaches, before the tipping point where things go wrong. The interview last spring when he declared “Maybe we have been arrogant ? and when I say we, I mean I…” was quite interesting and came as a surprise, but it came too late. But who can challenge a too successful leader ? The board probably… lots of thoughts about the role of the Board in this case too. An Executive Coach ? But he would need to be “authorized” to challenge his client, and strong. Fantastic material to create a fascinating case study for INSEAD’s “Coaching Certificate” and “International Directors” programs !

As workers face layoffs, uncertainty, and the burden of struggling economies, it's infuriating to watch corporate executives be rewarded with massive bonuses. #Stellantis #CEO #CarlosTavares is a glaring example. In 2023, he pocketed a staggering €36.5 million ($40.6 million), a 56% increase from the previous year. This includes substantial bonuses, despite the company facing significant challenges, particularly in North America, where operational failures and inventory mismanagement have led to layoffs and declining sales. While #Tavares publicly admitted to strategic missteps and even called his company's first-half results "humbling," the reality on the ground tells a different story—one where workers are left to pay the price for management's failures! It's not just frustrating; it's immoral. How can a CEO justify taking home (and keeping) millions in bonuses when the people who keep the company running are being shown the door? This isn't just a Stellantis problem; it's a systemic issue in corporate governance, where executive enrichment often comes at the expense of employees' livelihoods; heck we have seen it with #Tesla, a $50b bonus for the #CEO as he sends home tens of thousands of hard-working employees. It is easy for CEO's to take home ludicrous amounts of money when "things go well" but not refund any of that back, when times are tough!

Carlos Tavares has resigned as CEO of Stellantis immediately. According to Reuters, tensions arose in recent weeks between major shareholders, the board, and Tavares, leading to his #resignation. The company plans to appoint a new CEO by mid-2025. Stellantis' board, including chairman John Elkann, accepted Tavares' resignation and announced an interim executive committee will be formed. Tavares known as a respected leader in the auto industry faced scrutiny after declining sales in North America led to a profit warning for 2024, including a projected cash burn of up to 10 billion euros. This warning triggered a reshuffling of top management including changes to the CFO and head of North American operations. Tavares had led Stellantis since its formation in 2021. He warned that underperforming brands could be cut from the portfolio. His bold decisions, such as reducing auto production in Italy, often sparked conflict with unions and the Italian #government.
