This week at the Automate Show I had a really great conversation with Alvin Clark, a Sr. Developer Relations Manager at NVIDIA. My connection to NVIDIA is actually not new; they used to be my customer when I was the Silicon Valley Sales Manager at CST (now part of the Dassault Systemes - Simulia Software Portfolio) and also a partner for the development of high-performance engineering simulation using GPUs. I joined the NVIDIA Inception Program while developing supply chain AI at Algo - this program has now grown to a global network of over 18,000 technology startups! Fast forward a few years, after some twists and turns, now I get to partner with NVIDIA to learn and share ideas about innovation in robotics and AI for supercharging the manufacturing and automation industries, which I love! Based on Alvin's recommendations I managed to visit a few NVIDIA partner booths to see the practical applications being developed with their tech and it's a mix of industry heavy weights and newer startups: Universal Robots - dare I say the King of Cobots? Introducing Waymo, a car with no human behind the wheels known to be the world's first fully autonomous driverless Uber car. Waymo is a combined sensors, AI software, and a custom-built vehicle to deliver a safe, smooth, and fully autonomous ride. Waymo's fleet of vehicles can navigate complex traffic situations, obey all traffic laws, and respond to the unexpected, all while delivering a smooth and comfortable ride. Waymo's vehicles are equipped with a suite of sensors, including lidar, radar, and cameras, to detect and understand the environment around them. The vehicle's AI software processes the data from these sensors and makes decisions about how to navigate the world safely. Waymo's software is trained on a vast amount of data, including real-world driving experiences, from merging into traffic to turning at busy intersections. In addition to its sensors and software, Waymo's vehicles are also equipped with redundancies and safety features, such as a back-up driving system and a team of remote operators who can intervene if needed. The result is a vehicle that can navigate the roads safely and efficiently, with no human driver required. This week I continue to post about #AdditiveManufacturing papers that may be interesting for my network. This week I will focus on review papers, one that really "took off" is this - Metal additive manufacturing in aerospace: A review (full paper here https://lnkd.in/d4ZTBiGi). This was a great collaboration with Michael Brooks, Glen Snedden and Jean Pitot from the Aerospace Systems Research Institute (ASRI), Paul Gradl from NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, Elena López from Fraunhofer IWS, Martin Leary from RMIT University, Filippo Berto at the time at Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and Byron Blakey-Milner who was at the time still a student. Waymo's New Robotaxi Will Feature Fewer Sensors To Help Lower Costs: Waymo has unveiled its sixth-generation robotaxi, an electric minivan made by Chinese automaker Zeekr. While the company claims it's more advanced than previous generations, it features fewer sensors to help reduce costs. The Verge reports: [W]ithin its high-powered computer, it contains all the learnings of the previous five generations of Waymo's autonomous vehicles, meaning it won't have to do as much real-world testing as past models before it can be rolled out to the public. But looming over Waymo's assertion that its new robotaxi will be cheaper to produce is the possibility that it could also be subject to costly new tariffs against Chinese-made electric vehicles. Earlier this year, the Biden administration said it would quadruple tariffs on EVs from China to 100 percent, from the current 25 percent, as a way to "protect American workers and American companies from China's unfair trade practices." [...] Waymo says the sixth-gen robotaxi will feature a streamlined sensor suite of "16 cameras, 5 lidar, 6 radar, and an array of external audio receivers (EARs)." These sensors will help provide "overlapping fields of view, all around the vehicle, up to 500 meters away, day and night, and in a range of weather conditions." That's the equivalent of over five football fields of visible range. Waymo's use of multiple sensors is important for redundancy, in which multiple sensors and cameras can ensure the vehicle can continue to detect and respond to its surroundings if something fails. It's unclear where and when the new sixth-gen robotaxis will first appear. "Waymo currently operates in Phoenix, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, with plans to launch commercial service in Austin, Texas," notes the report.
