The Latinx Alliance is a cross-sector leadership network of Latinx leaders – public, private, nonprofit, philanthropic – focused on advocating for, and improving the well-being of, Latinx communities across Georgia. As one of Georgia’s fastest-growing groups, we require that the broader Georgian community recognize our growing demographic importance and dedicate appropriate resources and attention consistent with this reality. Our destiny is Georgia’s destiny. The Latinx Alliance focuses on three strategic priorities: 1. Transformative Narrative: owning our narrative and history and educating ALL Georgians about the growing importance of the Latinx community to our shared destiny. 2. Leadership Development: developing and supporting Latinx leadership across sectors and connecting them strategically around Alliance high-level objectives. 3. Policy & Advocacy: identifying shared policy goals and advocating as a chorus of voices at the local, state, and federal (GA federal delegation) level. I’m honored to know LatinoJustice PRLDEF's work well as a former client, and I couldn’t be more excited to see this vital report released at such a critical time. Project 2025 poses real threats to essential rights and services for the Latino community, and this analysis sheds light on what’s at stake. LatinoJustice PRLDEF’s analysis reveals troubling proposals that would harm: • Latinx children and youth by weakening public education, censoring curriculums, cutting back school meal programs, and reducing college aid. • Latino immigrants by reintroducing harsh anti-immigrant policies and limiting paths to legal migration. • Working Latino families by cutting overtime pay, reducing food assistance, and weakening wage and housing discrimination protections. • Latinos seeking healthcare by making it harder to access essential healthcare services, allowing prescription drug costs to rise, and moving people off Medicare into lower-quality care plans. • Latinx LGBTQ+ individuals by denying civil and human rights and restricting access to gender-affirming care. • Latino voters by imposing barriers to voting and casting suspicion on Latino voters’ eligibility. • Latinos vulnerable to environmental harm by stripping federal agencies of their environmental protection and disaster recovery roles. A couple days ago we listened to a fascinating presentation by Elena Ortiz from Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security who worked on this report that said women's lot in life has improved by only 3% on average globally. I found it interesting and encouraging, that there is a strong correlation between women's wellbeing and the wellbeing of the nation as seen in HDI, climate adaptation, state resilience and rule of law. Ergo, improving conditions for women will lead to positive outcomes for the whole country and this should play a larger part in Malaysia's policy goals. What I found interesting and absolutely disturbing however is that Malaysia ranked right after Saudi Arabia - how am I and my fellow Malaysian women worse off than in Saudi? If you read the report, Saudi has more cellphone usage, parliamentary representation, less legal discrimination and better community safety. I do take this with a pinch of salt as I guess that Malaysia has better data collection than Saudi. Therefore, our problems would be thrown into sharper light. Still, the fact that we are anywhere even close to a country that's typically seen as very regressive in its treatment of women is a warning that Malaysia needs to buck up. https://lnkd.in/eijAWccY

“Poll after poll and decade after decade, Latinos continue to lead on this question about protecting the environment,” adds Juan Altamirano with the Trust for Public Land. “And more importantly, those polls say we are willing to pay for it.” A 2021 poll by Pew Research Center found that eight in ten U.S. Latinos (81%) say addressing global climate change is either a top concern or one of several important concerns to them personally, with 39% saying it is a top personal concern. About 71% of Latinos in the same survey indicate climate change affects their local communities. Gonzalez and Altamirano hope that focusing on underserved communities — Latinos being the largest such in California — will help them pass a ground-breaking initiative on the November 5 ballot: Proposition 4, also called the Californians for Safe Drinking Water and Wildfire Prevention bond. Proposition 4 will provide $10 billion to prepare the state for the effects of climate change. The largest chunk, nearly $4 billion, will ensure safe, reliable drinking water through critical water investments, with $611 million of that amount directly benefiting underserved communities. https://lnkd.in/gZ7XS3mw

As part of a diverse community working to advance racial equity in the field of nonprofit, philanthropy, and fundraising, we at Breakin' It Down, a fiscal sponsorship project of Mujeres Latinas en Accion, have closely monitored the Fearless Fund lawsuit, since it began in August 2023.  The recent court ruling and settlement summarized below prove that we must continue our work unapologetically with intention. The firm’s decision comes after a yearlong battle over racial discrimination.  Following the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling against affirmative action in June 2023, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives came under attack across industries, including the charitable sector.  Several discrimination lawsuits were brought by the American Alliance for Equal Rights, led by conservative active Edward Blum, under Section 1981 of the 1866 Civil Rights Act, a Civil War-era statute which grants all individuals within the US jurisdiction the same rights and benefits as "enjoyed by white citizens" regarding contractual relationships (42 U.S.C. § 1981(a)).  Among them was the case against the Fearless Fund, which tested the legal limits of diversity-focused funding. #racialequity #nonprofit #philanthropy #fundraising #plenarysession #conference #chicago #nonprofitorganizations #leadershipexcellence #leadershipdevelopment

Statement From La Colaborativa’s Leadership On Election Our country has descended into an era of unspeakable uncertainty. Animated by a deep aversion to immigrants, communities of color, and democratic ideals, this election has been sobering. As our country is engrossed in divisive politics, La Colaborativa remains unfaltering in our commitment to safeguarding, uplifting, and empowering Latinx, immigrant, and BIPOC communities, particularly our most vulnerable neighbors. The coming years will inflict irreparable harm on our community, from mass deportations to rising xenophobia and hatred. Countless families are at risk of being harshly uprooted from their neighborhoods, deprived of fundamental rights, and denied the governmental resources vital to our collective wellbeing. Moreover, the lives of millions will be legitimately endangered. Since the election began, La Colaborativa has received a torrent of vitriolic hate speech and threats of violence, underscoring the immeasurable risks posed to our community. For over 35 years, La Colaborativa has been a steadfast advocate for Latinx and immigrant communities. As the largest Latino-led organization in Massachusetts, we stand firm in our commitment to protect and uplift our communities in the face of the new Trump administration. We’ve seen the destructive impact of harmful policies before—during the Bush administration, we faced initiatives like Secure Communities that terrorized immigrant families, destabilized our schools, fueled extreme racial profiling, and forced survivors of domestic violence to live in silence out of fear. During the first Trump administration, parents kept their children home from school to avoid ICE raids, and a vibrant city like Chelsea was left paralyzed, as deportation threats created a climate of fear and uncertainty. History is poised to repeat itself on an even larger scale, and we must prepare to fight back—together. Transcending politics, it’s imperative that we redouble our efforts to ensure all residents, regardless of immigration status, can gain access to essential housing, economic stability, education, food assistance, health equity, and immigration services. In an era when federal resources will dramatically wane, our team is resolutely focused on protecting our community at all costs, at all times. As a Hispanic executive, I’ve had the privilege—and the challenge—of leading diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and accessibility (DEIBA) efforts within predominantly white institutions. This work offers incredible opportunities to drive meaningful change, but it also comes with unique complexities. I share about this in my latest article with Hispanic Executive. This dual privilege and burden amplify the need for resilience, authenticity, and empathy. At the same time, I draw strength from my cultural heritage, emphasizing relational capital, community, and collaboration. These values not only shape my approach but also make me uniquely positioned to foster trust, unity, and buy-in for DEIBA initiatives. For leaders stepping into DEIBA roles, preparation is crucial. My advice? 1️⃣ Understand your institution’s culture to craft strategies that align with its ethos. 2️⃣ Invest in relational capital to build the trust and alliances needed to navigate resistance. 3️⃣ Lean into resilience and vision, keeping your focus on the transformative impact of this work. DEIBA leadership is about challenging norms and creating spaces where everyone belongs. By leveraging our cultural strengths, we can drive collective advancement and inspire lasting change. One of the highlights of working on the TODAY Show story, raising awareness for Caregiving Youth, was getting to know the folks at Kesem a little better. We were presented with a unique situation. The show's producers requested an interview with two Caregiving Youth: one from AACY in Florida and another available for an in-studio interview in LA. (Did you know there are only a handful of organizations in the US specifically helping young caregivers?) We reached out to these groups, and Kesem was able to step up in a major way on a tight timeline. They connected with Rocco and his mom, who were willing to share their story. Incredibly grateful for their partnership. The Kesem team is amazing. Both the American Association of Caregiving Youth (AACY) team and Kesem took great care in selecting the students to interview and understanding the sensitivity of their circumstances. *It's a big deal for a high schooler to talk to the world about this. The gravity of these caregiving situations is hard to capture. The two boys featured in this story are so brave. The weight of caring for a parent battling a life-threatening illness is a situation no kid should have to face "alone" without recognition and support. Everyone involved did an incredible job conveying the strength and resilience of these young caregivers and those they care for. The families participating did it because they believed it was important to bring this issue to light – they did it to help others. What we're doing feels relatively new to many. Yet, AACY Founder Dr. Connie Siskowski, RN, PhD has been a leading voice on this issue for years. Through her tireless leadership and collaboration on advocacy efforts, direct services programs, research, and education, the vision is turning into reality. However, we still have a long way to go. The UK, for instance, already recognizes and supports "young carers" through legislation, schools, and community programs. The United States should do the same. Is it a private funding issue, a government responsibility, or both? There is incredible insight here from respondents. Kitchen table issues continue to dominate priorities for Latinos, understanbly so. There's a story to be told within this slippery slope as latinos continue to lag behind, despite gains. - Of note, the number of Latinos who continue to worry over next month's rent or mortgage. -Sacrifices and decisions needed to be made around Healthcare - The lack of savings, both emergency & retirement #financialhealth #retirementsavings #LatinosandtheEconomy

The Far Side of Fundraising Tip of the Week Transactional fundraising leads to high rates of donor loss. Most organizations lose 4 out of 5 first-time donors. The more rapidly and impersonally we secure support, the more we sub-optimize giving potential and the more rapidly donors depart. High rates of donor attrition, coupled with the continue contraction of giving households, spell long-term disaster for most nonprofits. Don't follow the transactional lemmings as they plunged into the sea. Adopt sustainable practices. You may be in the minority but you will help your organization survive and eventually thrive. This one requires that you closely to see who stands out in adopting sustainable practices.
