A bit of a tribute to founders / humbling reminder for investors at the start of '25: I've looked at thousands of early-stage fundraising decks over the past two years. In stereotypical fashion, I can typically tell within 30 seconds (2-3 seconds per slide) if I'm going to dig in, and if it's a company I'd be interested in investing in. Over the last two months I have been working on a project with a really cool company who is raising a Series A. I've been supporting on building the deck, data room, etc. So I've been fully back in the early-stage operator seat. And let me tell you. It is SO MUCH HARDER than investing. I sent the deck to some investor friends for feedback. I really value their opinion. Their feedback was stuff that I tell founders all the time about their decks. But I flat out missed it when putting this deck together. Startups are so much easier said than done. It's really hard being in the arena. Founders live there every day. Cheers to you.

Next one up, Flagler Health! In an attempt to demystify some of the non-obvious elements we found when we first met the founders of our fastest growing portfolio companies at 186 Ventures, here is the third edition of the "idiosyncratic phenomenon". This highlight will be on Albert Katz, Leon Anijar, and Will Hu and their journey building Flagler Health to bring unprecedented AI enabled patient care to the world of musculoskeletal (MsK) providers. As the healthcare industry shifts to a value based care paradigm, there will be increased pressure on the entire industry to ensure patient outcomes improve, all the while helping providers generate more revenue / become more cost efficient. Since we co-led their March, 2024 seed round with Streamlined, the company has rolled out some of their newest remote therapeutic and chronic condition management features to many patients and providers alike, experiencing high revenue growth in such a short period of time. As a VC, there are times when you have to choose between prioritizing returns and supporting the founders you work with. It’s not easy because we have a fiduciary duty to our LPs, which, in our case, are primarily non-profits, to maximize returns. At Eniac, we play the long game: if we do what’s best for our founders, it will ultimately benefit our brand, reputation, and relationships, which will be best for our LPs in the long run.

I enjoyed going on Nick Telson-Sillett’s podcast, Pitch Deck by Forward Pursuit. Nick is a serial founder and investor (founded and exited DesignMyNight) so knows both sides of the table which always makes for an enriching chat. Some things we discussed: - The perceived power dynamic between VCs and founders can hinder productive conversations. - A compelling product demo can significantly influence investor interest. - Founders must focus on solving real customer problems to succeed. - Hiring standards are crucial for building a successful startup team. - Behavioural roadblocks can prevent the adoption of new solutions. - Validation from potential customers is key for pre-revenue startups. - The early-stage funding landscape has become more efficient and selective. - Pace of execution is a critical factor in attracting investment.

I recently saw this metric from Carta’s 1Q24 VC Fund Report, which is very concerning. DPI... is nowhere to be found in earlier vintages that probably should start showing DPI. Funding early-stage projects is great, but ultimately, these venture dollars need to exit their investments and pay back their limited partners. That’s where the metric Distributed to Paid-In Capital (DPI) comes in. While managing a fund, we get interim measures during the life of the fund (e.g. IRR, MOIC), but ultimately, “you can’t eat IRR.” If you want to build a lasting venture capital organization, you need to start showing DPI for your fund. Keep in mind that this is traditional VC data from Carta, and is not strictly crypto venture. Crypto venture tends to get liquidity earlier (tokens) and things tend to go parabolic sooner (faster, more unicorns) - but I’d wager that the data here is somewhat similar for Crypto VCs… Not as much DPI as there should be from these earlier vintages. Chat with Miles Clements about building Linear For me companies are like design problems: you have context, constraints & goals unique to you. Then you look for a solution that has a good fit to your unique problems. I 💯agree with Oz Merchant on this topic. Some folks advise founders to pitch very selectively and 'pick your pitch' - you get one shot, choose it wisely? I'm 180 degrees opposite of that - be a promiscuous pitcher! - ABP - ALWAYS BE PITCHING. Because your pitch gets better with every no, take that feedback, learn, iterate. Right now it's taking 50-100 no's for Triangle co's to get funding, it's still tough out there, so get through the no's fast to get to a yes. Check out the event - also go see others pitch, it all helps you get better - pitching is like PMF - lots of iteration, tons of grinding to get through to the other side.

Fundraising often feels like a black box. Not only do founders seeking venture backed dollars have to build a great company, but in the middle of a fundraise it can feel like a full time job. So, here are a few “hacks” to hopefully make your fundraising process go more smoothly… 📓1. Get your sh*t together: build your story, create your list (fit not fame!), data room time 🗓️ 2. Set your timeline: outline a process, there is nothing worse than a company that miscalculates and runs out of cash in the middle of the raise 🤸 3. Practice makes perfect: reps are more impactful than you think! 🤿 4. If you can’t get out of it, get into it: you as a founder are just as important as the business so what is the story you’re telling? Why is it compelling? Why now? ✏️ 5. Process is precision: run a fundraising process like a sales process, stay organized. This is a guide to help make the fundraising process easier and while I KNOW it’s hard, people like me WANT you to be successful. Don’t be discouraged and keep on keeping on! 👏🏻

So a lot of scale-ups and startups have fallen off the venture track. They aren’t growing at venture-scale rates anymore. Triple Triple Double Double is now in the rear-view mirror. That can be tough. It quickly becomes impossible to raise any capital other than from insiders. Folks leave. It’s a big transition. Still … still … if you can’t get all the way back to venture-scale growth, at least stay or get to Private Equity levels of growth. What’s that? Roughly: - $20m or more ARR - 100% or higher NRR - 30% or higher revenue growth - Profitable, break-even, or close And - Don’t raise money at a crazy high valuation At that level, private equity firms will still be interesting in buying you in many cases. You’ll get calls, and especially if you are in a space they can combine with a large player, offers. You usually have to get to that level of scale, that level of growth, and that amount of efficiency. And the offers are lower in many (but not all) cases that you’d get in a hot deal from a tech buyer. But it can be real, good money for everyone

I’m excited to publicly share something that has been in the works for a few months at the 9point8 Collective. We’ve launched our Virtual Studio! This is a program for early-stage companies that provides the coaching, development and venture-building tools they need to find traction and scale. The program is modeled off of the venture-building processes found inside #VentureStudios, which have delivered 2X IRR and exit 45% faster than traditional #VC-backed #startups over the last 10 years. Some of the secret sauce to this is that studios have found a way to validate strategies early on, de-risk execution, preserve and extend limited runway, and create efficient business models very fast.
