💡 Lead your remote/distributed teams with empathy (my own experience): Working with remote or distributed teams can be a challenge for Engineering Managers. Keeping your teammates aligned across different time zones, countries, or cultures requires excellent organization, best practices, and a lot of emotional intelligence. One thing I’ve learned is that beyond technology and processes, the human factor is probably the most important to manage. You’ll need to resolve conflicts, build trust, and boost productivity, but you won’t be able to do it without empathy—I can assure you of that. A few quick practices that have helped me are: ▶ Clear goals: Ensure everyone is following the same direction. Keep the goals visible to the team (e.g., JIRA board, Slack, etc.), and provide friendly reminders if you have stand-ups with them. ▶ Good communication and cadence: Schedule regular check-ins. Make sure the team feels heard. ▶ Flexibility and cultural differences: Be flexible with schedules and learn how to communicate with different cultures, as not everyone works in the same way. Practice deep listening with your teammates and set clear expectations. Learn what is "normal" for them and find a balance to create a good fit within your team. ▶ Foster a safe environment: Create open discussion spaces for the whole team, plus 1:1 meetings. A meeting I’ve been using a lot, which often gets overlooked, is the retrospective. But for your team to participate and share their true feelings, they need to feel comfortable. 💡 Continuous Feedback is key to Building Stronger Teams: As an Engineering Manager, I’ve learned that one of the most powerful tools we have it’s feedback. I think feedback fosters team growth and engagement. I'm not speaking only about annual reviews. It’s about making feedback a part of your day-to-day management style. What have I discovered over the years? 🔄 Real-time feedback builds trust: sharing it openly and regularly, it creates a culture of transparency opening the door for honest conversations. 🌱 Not only focussed in performance: empower growth in your teams, if they're growing, the performance and results will do it consequently. 📈 Small corrections prevent big issues or problems, giving us time to adjust our team's direction. 💬 Two-way street: be open to receiving feedback, not only from your manager but also from your team. I regularly ask my team, "What can I do better?". You can also create a quarterly feedback form to gather their input So, you'll create a team culture in which engagement, better problem-solving, and a stronger sense of ownership will make the difference 🚀 What has been your experience on this? The tech hiring market feels good again, with urgency returning to the forefront—particularly for early-stage startups. The selectiveness is higher than ever though... The most in-demand roles? I've been learning Spanish for a little over a year. It's difficult enough to spell words in my native language (English) correctly, but Spanish adds another layer of difficulty. Accents and tildes are important in Spanish and I'd like to get better with those! As a Duolinguo user, the change of the application icon definitely caught my attention at some point, but keeping it like that for a while doesn't seem to be a smart move. Changing it back to normal after some activity would be my obvious thought. I am not an expert on this topic, but from users comments it seems keeping it is generating the actual opposite effect, however the company reports it as a success for getting other users back to use the app. A real question I have is, do you think it makes sense to discourage a bit your loyal users in exchange of getting some former users back? I think it is an interesting experiment for application designers / developers that is usually validated by A/B tests.

Reading about the CAP theorem in distributed systems. Some posts online claim to have systems that achieve consistency and availability - is this possible, if so, how? I read an article from Coda Hale called "you can't sacrifice partition tolerance" - link in the comments. I've been looking into how LLM systems operate, much like Google search, where availability supersedes consistency but obviously trading systems must (for the most part) prioritise consistency. ...and we're hiring - link in the comments! #distributedsystems #Hiring

Friday was my last day at Amazon after 7 years. Typically these types of posts aren't particularly interesting; so I'll just say that I'm super glad to be closing this chapter of my career and moving on to other endeavors. I've been ready to move on for about 2 years now, but market conditions have been rough and a lot of moves wouldn't have made sense. There's a lot of good, bad, and ugly that goes on at Amazon; I'll be grateful for the good, and forgive (but not forget) the bad and ugly. If anyone wants to learn vicariously; I think the thing that makes Amazon distinctive is their understanding of the power of processes and incentives, specifically, how to manipulate those variables to achieve the outcomes they desire (be it good or bad). If you get something out of this post, it’s that you should be aware of these structures as you go through your career. Depending on how they are set up; they will work for you or against you. And when they aren’t serving you, there’s two options: you change them, or you change yourself. Cheers - and super looking forward to my next gig. (Also the obligatory laptop and badge photo).

Yesterday, I came across a post by Gina Acosta Gutiérrez, where she shared an interview with Jensen, the CEO of Trillion Dollar Company I really liked that and wanted to understand how someone at that level "reasons/thinks" through challenges. Surely, Jensen knows something I don’t (LOL)! After diving into some articles and videos, I grasped the essence of his approach, known as “first principles thinking”. This strategy comes from a fundamental question Jensen asks himself when faced with new challenges: “How hard can it be?” Here’s a simple breakdown of Jensen’s strategy: 1. Understand the fundamentals: Strip the problem down to its basic element. Forget about how things have always been done and focus on the core principle 2. Question Assumptions: Challenge existing assumptions and rethink the problem from the ground up. Don’t be afraid to ask “Why” multiple times 3. Leverage Current Tools and Knowledge: Consider the current conditions, available tools, and your own motivation. How have things changed, and what new instrument can you use? 4. Reinvent and Innovate: Use this fresh perspective to redesign and innovate. Ask yourself, “Given everything I know now, how would I redo this? How would I invent the whole thing?” Jensen’s approach is a reminder that we can always learn, adapt, and innovate by returning to first principles and thinking deeply about our challenges.
