An article I co-authored with Dr. Kara Margolis, Director of the NYU Pain Research Center, was recently published in an edition of the Lancet Gastroenterology and Hepatology. “Considerations for Treating Autistic Individuals in Gastroenterology Clinics” summarizes the research over these many years confirming gastrointestinal problems are one of the most common comorbidities in autistic individuals, presenting with more than four times increased risk compared with non-autistic children.  In this brief article, Dr. Margolis and I outline a patient visit and what a healthcare provider should review with the patient's family or caregivers including diet, over-the-counter medications, nutritional supplements, changes in the individual’s living environment and other questions. Having worked with this population for many years, we offer guidelines on planning a visit to the clinic that can help minimize a patient’s anxiety using visual schedules and social stories that may include pictures of the clinic and the staff.
