In vertical SaaS, the very best companies landed with a product solving a specific, burning pain point that horizontal solutions solved badly and then became broad product suites over time (ServiceTitan, Veeva Systems, Doximity, etc). My partner Gordon Ritter calls this “layering the cake”. In vertical AI, the landing wedges are much more brittle. While the painpoints they solve are very real (and often unaddressable by SaaS alone), they’re also much more likely to commodotize in the near term as the tech advances. 👀 Therefore, the need to layer the cake in vertical AI is much more urgent than in vertical SaaS. 👀 The best vertical AI CEOs not only recognize the dynamic, but talk about it openly. Helps those around them keep up the speed of innovation and their eyes on the bigger prize.

Massachusetts' tech ecosystem thrives through a unique "DNA" of innovation—educational institutions, established companies, venture capitalists, and a deeply collaborative environment. With over 100 colleges and universities, including global leaders like MIT and Harvard, the region consistently ranks as one of the top innovation hubs in the world. An example of the strength of this DNA is in the biopharma industry. The 2023 Biopharma Funding & Pipeline Report stated that Massachusetts-based biopharma companies received $7.67 billion in venture capital funding, accounting for 31% of all national VC investments, second only to California. What can other states learn from what Massachusetts has created?

Want to build wealth faster? Skip startups. Buy Boring Old Businesses. Here’s why: 1. They’re already making money. 2. They come with customers, systems, and momentum. 3. They’re undervalued – 2.5x profits is standard. 4. SBA loans or seller financing make them accessible. 5. Easy profit boosters: raise prices or add new products. 6. They’re easier to scale than startups. Startups fail 65% of the time within the first 5 years. But "boring" businesses? They’re built to last. Don’t build from scratch. Buy something proven. New York City startups are addressing the lack of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles (EVs) by installing curbside solutions. These startups, such as It’s Electric, Gravity, and Voltpost, offer different approaches, including tapping into existing power sources, utilizing fast charging technology, and integrating chargers into lampposts. Despite challenges like grid capacity and vandalism, these startups aim to make EV ownership more accessible and appealing to urban residents.

Earlier this month, PitchBook reported that "13 percent of venture GPs don't plan to raise another fund as the LP pullback spoils fundraising efforts, according to PitchBook's semiannual VC Tech Survey. That's double the rate in H1 2023, when 6 percent said they had no plans to raise another fund.
