“Rarely does an intern show up each and everyday with as much drive and passion for the startup ecosystem as Ghalia. During her time at Yaletown Partners supporting the Accelerate Fund over the spring and summer of 2021, Ghalia demonstrated the ability to pick up systems and processes quickly as well as being able to assist multiple areas of operations at the venture capital firm. She has a natural aptitude for startup relations and resonates very well with the next generation of tech entrepreneurs, being one herself! Ghalia was instrumental in the deal screening process as she assessed new opportunities for investment thesis fit and pre-due diligence checks. She impressed us with her strong work ethic, comfort in collaborating with other teammates or taking tasks independently. Ghalia sought feedback and took initiative to continue developing her skills and learning more about the capital markets/investment industry. In addition, Ghalia was key in enhancing our systems to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion at the fund through her work of compiling over 200 female-founded startups across Alberta. Apart from being a dedicated team member, Ghalia was extremely professional in communications internal to the firm as well as to external stakeholders such as co-investors, entrepreneurs, community members, and trusted networks. Ghalia's positive attitude and respectful nature was well-received within the community and has created a lasting impact on our organization and the overall Edmonton technology ecosystem. I am confident that Ghalia will have an extremely bright future and continue infusing an entrepreneurial mindset to her professional endeavours. Ghalia would be a tremendous asset to any team fortunate enough to have her on board!”

You're facing criticism on your public speaking style. How can you handle it effectively?
Public speaking has played a key role in my life, from coaching students at TalkMaze to delivering 4 TEDx talks. Along the way, I’ve faced critiques—too soft-spoken, too loud, too fast—and as someone sensitive to rejection, it wasn’t easy. But I’ve learned that criticism is an opportunity for growth. Here’s what’s helped me: Pause and Reflect: Instead of shutting down, I use feedback to improve, like watching my pace. Filter Feedback: Not all advice is relevant. I’ve learned to balance conflicting feedback with my goals. Stay Confident: Criticism means people are paying attention. I apply what resonates and keep moving forward. Public speaking is about connection, and growth comes from knowing when to listen and when to trust yourself.

The Diana Award
Established in memory of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, The Diana Award is the most prestigious accolade a young person aged 9-25 years can receive for their social action or humanitarian work. This is the longest running award for young people through a retrospective nomination process only. We believe this is special. Young people do not work towards the award, rather they demonstrate their suitability through their actions, without any expectation of reward.
