Snowflake's Investor Day presentation this week was a great showcase of how CRO-CFO alignment is crucial in driving company strategy. The session had plenty of evidence of effective collaboration between the Sales and Finance teams. For example, Snowflake's FY2025 sales compensation redesign is directly tied to the company's strategic objectives to drive logo and consumption growth. This is impossible for a CRO or CFO to achieve alone; they have to do it together. My favorite piece of evidence of Snowflake's CRO-CFO alignment is the chart below (from last year's deck), which shows how sales productivity dictates new sales investment. Sales productivity is defined as (x) net new ACV in $ millions divided by (y) AE headcount at fiscal year-end. The 1.0x threshold metric means the company will only invest in new sales headcount when AEs on average close at least $1 million in net new ACV annually. In other words, as long as Finance sees the productivity, Sales will get more budget to hire more reps. This defines accountabilities and rules of engagement: The CFO proactively supports the CRO's evolving needs, and the CRO has clear expectations about driving efficient growth. This chart is easy to put on a slide, but achieving the level of alignment required for a common CRO-CFO definition of "sales productivity" is very difficult. Few companies succeed at this, but Snowflake shows it can be done. What makes Snowflake different? Here's a hint: The previous CEO used to call himself "Frank (Anti-Silo) Slootman" on his LinkedIn profile. That tells you everything you need to know. Some additional charts on the aggregate hyperscaler data from Q1. The charts below show 1) The aggregate net new ARR added on q quarterly basis. Q1 is always a seasonal low 2) The YoY growth in net new ARR in Q1. Q1 '23 was the "bottom" with AWS actually adding negative net new ARR (ie they shrunk), so the YoY comp is the "easiest" for the aggregate bucket.

In this episode of our AnalystANGLE series, I'm joined by Kirk Dunn, CEO of Event Store for a conversation about data platforms, how the database as we know it is broken, and undergoing a massive evolution, and how getting arms around all things data is the path to creating value for the enterprise, and why the demand for event-native data platforms are the path forward. Event Store recently announced that industry veterans Kirk Dunn, former Cloudera COO, and David Wang, former Redpanda VP of Engineering, joined the company, with Dunn assuming the CEO role and Wang, VP of Engineering. Their mission is to help build and scale Event Store's enterprise GTM model and help guide the company in its plan for rapid expansion across the U.S. and internationally. Dunn and I discuss the many data challenges organizations face today. Data that feeds enterprise and AI ops, LLMs, and analytics models, originates in the operational database, but often the process of getting data from the origin database through and into any analytics platform is less than ideal. That's what Event Store aims to fix. The ‘real-time enterprise’ — which is where the enterprise is evolving, can only be achieved if an organization can feed real-time, business-critical data in fine-grained streams from origination to downstream use cases. Event Store’s event-native data platform starts with data at origin and is uniquely designed to improve the data journey from origination to destination — continually capturing all data in a guaranteed order and streaming it in real-time for downstream analytics and AI use cases. This is a more comprehensive, more efficient approach, and not only plays an outsized role in improving the data journey, but also significantly enhances modern data analytics and AI outcomes. In addition to the appointments of Dunn and Wang, Event Store has announced extensive enhancements to its Event Store Cloud product, streamlining management and working to improve ease of use and increase time-to-value. With automated provisioning and the ability to resize clusters dynamically to meet specific application needs, customers can now stand up an instance of Event Store Cloud in minutes. Event Store is also now available on the AWS Marketplace, where AWS customers can quickly deploy the Event Store's real-time event-native data platform to help develop real-time apps using their existing AWS budget. This streamlined path to developing apps or data solutions, an easier way to pay for Event Store Cloud usage and support by using AWS's pre-negotiated contract through private offers, combines to make Event Store an attractive part of the value proposition for AWS customers. It's been a few days now since Snowflake's 2024 Summit last week - and I sat down this week (along with Lauren Saalmuller) to put together a few thoughts on year over year trends & market changes we're seeing. #1 - Marketing activation from Snowflake & the CDW has good awareness - and it's not just about copying data. #2 - Adtech & Martech are in fact converging - but slower that I would have expected. #3 - AI is hotter than ever. AI has come a long way since I programmed my first MDP agent in 2010 with David Parkes in CS181 at Harvard University. A decade later in late 2020, at GrowthLoop, we started experimenting with #gpt3 for audience building and activation, knowing that as the models improved, we wanted to be ready to bring value to our customers. On March 14, 2023 - the same day #gpt4 and #PaLM launched, we launched one of the first enterprise applications of generative AI with Marve, our natural language audience builder (link in comments). Marve enables marketers to define an audience or goal in natural language, then our system creates relevant audiences from their connected data in their data warehouse in seconds, dramatically reducing the time to value and presenting marketers with new ideas to drive revenue. Since then, we've launched new features based on feedback from our customers like Audience Discovery which proactively builds data-driven audiences based on inferred goals and previously successful audiences.
