This 2023 report from the American Urological Association (AUA) rings alarm bells. Soaring demand for urological intervention confronting shrinking urologist capacity to treat patients.  Into this stressed environment, Avvio Medical’s Microsphere Cavitation System will make its entrance with market clearance expected in 2025. I’m definitely not a brain surgeon…and come to think of it, no one asked me to apply…but I do get to talk to people who are. It was explained to me that spinal surgery is extremely complex - more diagnostically challenging than total joint surgery - the field where Canary cut its teeth. Five surgeons could examine the same patient and deliver 5 different diagnoses. So many variables. So many possible interpretations. So many treatment alternatives. How could sensors and AI ever unravel a problem so nuanced? I fumbled my answer to the question. When I replayed it in my mind, even I wasn’t convinced. Is complexity an argument against the use of smart implants in spine? Nvidia chips can handle 10,000 variables, a group of them can decifer exponentially more - a feat hard to replicate for even the finest human minds. If there isn’t agreement amongst experts, isn’t more data better than less data? Could complexity be an argument in favour of big data and ML/AI, not against it? Looking forward to an exciting and challenging project.
