PSA: To all of the 1800+ early stage founders on our platform: If you want the clearest, fastest, cheapest path to growing your brand, get into the stores and demo. I understand that you are super busy building and running a company, and I get it, that this isn’t scalable once you are big. But an actual founder demoing their OWN product in a store is 100x more powerful than a bib tag, a shelf talker, or retailer training. Shanyi’s Co-founder Elise Popped into Fresh Thyme yesterday and promptly sold the store out of every last unit on their innovation endcap. The store has already reordered and there are 8 more cases on the way. In 2002 I saw Vitamin Water demoed almost every single day at my store in WFM, and product flying off the shelves one store at a time. 5 years later, they sold to Coca Cola for $4.1BN. My recommendation to all of the emerging local coffee/cheese/beer/bakery vendors that I approved into my stores was to follow in those footsteps. The ones that took that advice were MUCH more successful. Remember: The #1 KPI a retail CM is being evaluated on is YoY comp sales. If their comp is below the company average, that is bad for them, and therefore bad for you. If your SKUs are selling 3-5 units per week, it means you are INCREASING their comp compared to some other replacement product on the shelf, and you will stick around. if you get into a few stores every month and blow them out of their inventory while connecting with a few hundred consumers, you will move the needle. AppLovin, Snap, and the new Walled Garden pathway A notable reversal took place in Q2 of this year: the market capitalization of AppLovin, the mobile gaming ad network, overtook that of Snap on a sustained basis. As of this writing, Snap’s market cap is $13.91BN to AppLovin’s $28.88BN. In looking at the divergent outcomes across AppLovin, Snap, and other advertising platforms, more important to consider than specific feature implementations is the imperative of expanded access to data that doesn’t adhere to the canonical conversion feedback loop. And in AppLovin’s case, this acquisition of data calls into question the popular definition of a Walled Garden.

CAVA (~$35M/restaurant) and Chipotle Mexican Grill (~$20M/restaurant) far outperform other industry comps for valuation per location. What's their secret? A recent conversation with investor Andy Giacone from Roark Capital summed it up brilliantly: "I've done due diligence on a LOT of public and private restaurants. One of the assets that consistently leads to the highest valuations is the robustness of a brand's loyalty program. For B2C businesses, a scale and high-performing loyalty program is almost as important as recurring revenue in B2B." Why? Performant loyalty programs offers predictability and therefore downside protection while also making it far easier to achieve robust future growth. McKinsey & Company concurs: "While growth is difficult to sustain, it is generously rewarded. In examining 15 major publicly traded restaurant companies... there was a more than 80 percent correlation between annualized same-store sales growth and annualized total shareholder returns.... Successful loyalty programs translate directly into financial results, often encouraging both larger order sizes and greater order frequency from program members. These programs can funnel customers into brands’ first-party delivery businesses, which offer the brand higher margins than it receives from orders conducted through third-party delivery services."

Are #VC exits in standstill and what does it mean for the #CPG companies? Just a handful of large VC-backed companies have gone public since Q1 2022, exiting at only $70bn cumulative worth. i) less than the value recorded in any quarter in the record-breaking 2021 ii) staggering 90.5% decline from 2021’s record highs of $750bn iii) and more importantly the first time the figure has dipped below $100bn since 2016 What does it mean for CPGs? 1. Strategic Acquisitions: As VC-backed companies struggle to justify their high valuations or demonstrate the necessary fundamentals for IPOs, they may get forced to sell at lower price point to a strategic acquirer, and #FMCG players are well-positioned to capitalize on this lack trend 2. Investment opportunities for CVCs: smaller rounds and less competition may enable CPG companies to get stake in the most promising start-ups that would otherwise be quickly scooped by Sequoias and Tigers of this world ;) 3. Mention a pivot and invariable the stories of Stewart Butterfield shifting gaming companies into Flickr (photo sharing) and Slack (messaging) invariably come to mind or even William Wrigley pivoting from giving away gum to sell soap to just selling gum. But the thing that founders often overlook is that product isn't the only source for innovation or for a pivot. You can innovate around service delivery, payment, market segment, and even product use. For example, something as simple as shifting to value based billing, instead of a fixed monthly fee can eliminate friction or align the product with industry norms.
