💪 Funding news: Northeastern University's Center for Inclusive Computing is part of a $150MM grant from Pivotal Ventures aimed at addressing the workforce demand for more technical talent in #artificialintelligence. The investment will expand CIC’s capacity to work with partner schools on the development of AI tracks within undergraduate computing degrees, and create pathways for non-computing majors to pursue master’s degrees in AI. In South Florida, CIC funds work to increase representation of #women and #underrepresented communities in #computerscience at partner institutions such as Florida International University and Miami Dade College. Results across the 97 colleges and universities CIC supports in this work speak for themselves; from Fall 2019 to Fall 2023: ➡️ 136% and 99% growth in Black/African American women and men, respectively, majoring in computing ➡️ 116% and 69% growth in the number of Hispanic women and men, respectively, majoring in computer science These increases compare with growth rates of 64% and 38% for women and men majors overall at these schools. DALI Lab Drives Innovation: Technigala and Y Combinator events feature tech projects from Dartmouth. “DALI is a student-driven curiosity lab. We design and build technology solutions for a diverse array of problems for partners from around the world,” says DALI Director Tim Tregubov, a senior lecturer in the Department of Computer Science. As the Dean of Northeastern University’s Khoury College of Computer Sciences, I have witnessed the rapid growth and evolution of our field. In this pivotal time, computer scientists are grappling with difficult and consequential questions regarding the technologies under our charge. The ongoing debate around the direction of computer science education has been a topic of concern for many, and Ian Bogost’s recent article in The Atlantic, “Universities Have a Computer-Science Problem,” brought new attention to these critical discussions.    My op-ed, "Computer Science Needs a Course Correction," addresses the need to rethink our approach to computer science education. I delve into the ethical, social, and interdisciplinary dimensions that are essential for preparing our students to navigate and shape the future of technology responsibly.    I invite you to read the full op-ed about how to address this thorny challenge and share your thoughts about the future of computer science education.

In the most recent episode of the Achieving Joy and Mastery in Public Schools podcast, Venu Govindaraju, a pioneer in #artificialintelligence (AI) research and innovation, and #UBuffalo’s vice president for research and economic development, sits down with Brian Graham, Ed.D., superintendent of Grand Island Public Schools to talk about UB’s work in harnessing AI to revolutionize education! In January 2023, the National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded $20 million to a team led by Govindaraju to establish the National AI Institute for Exceptional Education at UB. As director and principal investigator of the award, Govindaraju is leading the development of AI tools that will screen children early for speech and/or language processing challenges, which is expected to alleviate the shortage of #speechlanguagepathologists as well as help children with dyslexia, dysgraphia and other communication impairments.
